WHY DO WE CELEBRATE MLK DAY?
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, often referred to as MLK Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that honors the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year, close to Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday on January 15.
It is a day dedicated to remembering and celebrating the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., who played a crucial role in the American civil rights movement. Many people participate in community service activities, educational programs, and events that promote equality and justice on MLK Day. It serves as a time for reflection on the progress made in civil rights and the ongoing work toward achieving King's dream of a more inclusive and equal society.

Kings' I Have a Dream Speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP4iY1TtS3s
Today and over the weekend, we have had the opportunity to reflect on the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr., a beacon of justice, equality, and love. In the spirit of his enduring legacy, we seek inspiration to become instruments of positive change.
We must continue to have the courage to confront injustice, the strength to champion equality, and the wisdom to recognize the interconnectedness of all humanity. Like Dr. King and his supporters, we must continue to strive for a world where individuals are judged by the content of their character rather than external attributes.
During these divisive and turbulent times, we must find solace in the power of compassion and understanding. Let our actions be fueled by a commitment to justice and a deep-seated belief in the possibility of a better tomorrow.
As we move forward, let us be catalysts for unity and bridge builders across divides. We must always to create communities where diversity is celebrated, and every voice is heard and valued.
We express gratitude for the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the countless others who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of justice and equality.
May we honor their memory by embodying the principles of love, compassion, and resilience.

MY FINAL INSIGHTS ON MLK:
AN AVENGER OR JEDI?
| |
Recently, I have been turning to Disney to be inspired by the Jedi in Star Wars or the Marvel Avengers.
However, throughout history of mankind, there have been real Avengers, real heroes, living among us.
Like the Jedi in the Star Wars saga and the Avengers, these Leaders, during our darkest times in history, lit up the world with hope, changed their communities, their nations, by refusing to sit back and accept oppression, fear, and violence. They had no special powers. They were ordinary citizens united around a purpose larger than themselves, were able to change the world and their communities.
This weekend, we have the chance to honor and celebrate such a hero, such an Avenger or Moral Jedi, the inspiring freedom fighter Dr. Martin Luther King, who joins the likes of other human heroes such as Gandhi, Mandela, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
A free India, a post Apartheid South Africa, the right for black Americans to vote, desegregation were all made possible by the marches to freedom led by such heroes. At the time, many of the causes they fought for were not even popular or accepted, but they had to get out of their comfort zones, and fight for change.
Today, we honor such a hero, the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King.
We must not only remember his inspiring speeches, his brave struggle in the midst of a storm, but challenge ourselves to live our lives like him during these very divisive times. His march for racial equality in America was a marathon, not a sprint.
At each mile marker, he and his colleagues, experienced ridicule, humiliation, intimidation, and often imprisonment, but they never lost sight of their finish line, a nation, free from any discrimination where all citizens were treated equally under the law. John Lewis took so many beatings in Selma, so Black Americans could vote, but we still have more work to do.
Let us never forget that positive change in America has come from ordinary citizens, who were not willing to accept a divided and unjust society. Sometimes, apathy or indifference to challenging times can be our worst enemy.
Where would we today if Dr. King had decided to postone his Dream? What if he did not have the courage to stand by his convictions and beliefs, which were not popular at the time?
I cannot think of a better time than now to use the light and love of our hearts, to transform our nation for the better, and to be or own Gandhis, Kings, and agents for bold, positive change.

Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) holds a significant place in the tapestry of humanity as a prominent leader in the American civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s. His contributions to the fight against racial segregation and his advocacy for equality and justice have left a lasting impact not only in the United States but also globally.
MLK is best known for his role in promoting nonviolent civil disobedience as a means to achieve civil rights reform. His famous speeches, such as the "I Have a Dream" speech delivered during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, continue to resonate with people around the world. In this speech, he expressed his vision of a future where individuals would be judged by their character rather than the color of their skin.
King's leadership and commitment to justice led to significant advancements in civil rights legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. His efforts contributed to dismantling institutionalized racism and paved the way for greater equality and inclusion.
Beyond his impact on civil rights, MLK's philosophy of nonviolence and his emphasis on love, justice, and equality have inspired movements for social justice and human rights globally. His legacy continues to be celebrated annually on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day dedicated to honoring his contributions and reflecting on the ongoing work needed to achieve his dream of a more just and equitable society.

MAKE IT AN MLK DAY OF SERVICE
Make it an MLK Day of Service: https://americorps.gov/serve/volunteer/mlk-day
In addition to being a day of remembrance, MLK Day has also been designated as a national day of service.
The MLK Day of Service encourages individuals to engage in acts of service and volunteerism in their communities. Many people participate in various community service projects, such as volunteering at local shelters, organizing food drives, participating in neighborhood cleanups, and more. The aim is to promote King's values of equality, justice, and service to others.
If you're interested in participating in MLK Day of Service activities, you can check with local community organizations, schools, or government agencies to find out about planned events and volunteer opportunities in your area. It's a meaningful way to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and contribute to positive change in your community.
In my next newsletter, I will highlight the wonderful service work of The Morrsiville Indian Amerians Service Group, led by Morrisville resident Maha Shanmugham. They have served lunch for our Fire Department and to staff on Thanksgiving. Pictured here with our Firefighters!

My Pongal Message: https://www.facebook.com/steve.s.rao/videos/350541461252654
I want to wish the members of our Tamil Community a very happy and festive Pongal.
Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and in other parts of South India. It is typically observed in January and is a four-day festival that marks the end of the winter season. Pongal is dedicated to the Sun God and is a time for expressing gratitude for the harvest.
The festival involves the preparation of a special dish called "Pongal," which is a sweet rice dish cooked with newly harvested rice, milk, jaggery, and other ingredients. Pongal is also the name of the festival itself.
During the celebration, people decorate their homes, conduct traditional rituals, and participate in various cultural activities.
It is a time for family gatherings and festivities, and people often exchange greetings and gifts.
Pongal is an important cultural and religious festival in South India, symbolizing prosperity, abundance, and the renewal of life.
As we celebrate this occasion, we are grateful for the remarkable transformation the Tamil community has brought to North Carolina!

REZONING FOR MORE APARTMENTS IN MORRISVILLE
Please come out and share any concerns and ideas next week at our Council meeting regarding the Casto amendment request to the Mixed Use Planning Development at Park West Village, which would demolish the Theater (64,000 square feet) and replace the Theater with over 312 Multi Family Units. The plan would plan for 27,000 more square feet of retail and 21,000 square feet of office along with plans to create and provide more amenities for community gathering.
At this time, I am not in favor of this rezoning.
I would like your ideas on any other type of development you would like to see in this area. Residents are concerned about adding more apartments when many residents have expressed concern about frequent school assignments, and the need for more adequate transportation and school infrastructure.
Breckenridge, Kitts Creek and Providence families have been reassigned from Parkside Elementary and Alston Ridge to Pleasant Grove Elementary, and many families are now having to go on both traditional and year round calendars.
At the same time, Casto has served as a strong partner for our Town for many years and the Park West development has led to signifcant revenue growth and opportunity for our residents and businesses. I hope we can arrive at a decision that honors this partnership but at the same time takes into account our resident concerns.
Please email me your opinions and ideas to sr@steverao.com on this rezoning.

Governor Cooper wins Court Battle on Environmental Appointment changes
Gov. Roy Cooper secured a court order Thursday blocking recent changes to membership of the state Environmental Management Commission.
After a new state law replaced two Cooper appointees with appointees from the state agriculture commissioner, the EMC voted Thursday to drop a lawsuit against the state Rules Review Commission.
Cooper argued before Superior Court Judge Rebecca Holt that the EMC's decision proved that lawmakers had violated the state constitution by taking away his authority to control a majority of EMC appointments.

COUNCIL OF STATE FILINGS END! LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
Scores of candidates filed for nearly a dozen high-profile elected positions in North Carolina where the incumbents aren't running in 2024 because of redistricting, retirements or term limits.
The two-week candidate filing period for next year's elections ended at noon Friday at the State Board of Elections and at all 100 county boards. Primaries will be held March 5 to whittle down the field where multiple candidates are running for their
party's nominations.
Six of the 10 statewide elected officials making up the Council of State — with Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper heading the list — and five of the 14 members of the U.S. House delegation aren't running again or are seeking new positions.
The state constitution prevents Cooper from running for a third consecutive term. Nearly a dozen people across four parties filed candidacy papers to succeed him, according to a state elections board list. They include Democrats Attorney General Josh Stein and former Supreme Court Justice Mike Morgan and Republicans Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, State Treasurer Dale Folwell and attorney Bill Graham.
Missing from the elections board list was former state GOP Sen. Andy Wells, who had announced his candidacy for governor months ago. He didn't immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.
State Auditor Beth Wood and Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson also aren't seeking reelection. Wood prepared to resign on Friday from the auditor's position that she has held in 2009. Cooper's choice to finish out her term, Jessica Holmes, is an auditor candidate next year.
For lieutenant governor, 15 people signed up to succeed Robinson, including four current or former state legislators. Filing for the post minutes before the noon deadline was Mark H. Robinson, a Sampson County Democrat who has been running for several months.
Mark H. Robinson, a former Navy officer, said Friday that his campaign isn't designed to cause voter confusion with the other Mark Robinson, saying he has believed for decades that he would run for statewide office.
While the two names won't appear on the same primary ballot, they could if both advance to the general election, albeit for different positions.
"I'm not trying to confuse anyone," Mark H. Robinson, 62, told reporters. "I think this is what my calling is, and that is to help as many people in the state of North Carolina before I die."
A leading candidate must get more than 30% of the primary vote to win the nomination outright. Otherwise runoffs are possible later in the spring.
Three of the five members of Congress who aren't running are Democratic Reps. Jeff Jackson, Kathy Manning and Wiley Nickel. Each of them said it was futile to seek reelection given that the redrawing of the congressional map by the Republican-controlled General Assembly this fall makes their districts lean strongly Republican. Jackson is now running for attorney general.
Fourteen Republicans alone are seeking the GOP nomination in Nickel's now-reconfigured 13th District, which includes part of Raleigh but stretches north to rural counties on the Virginia border and points south.
The Republicans not running a Bishop, who is also running for state attorney general, and Rep. Patrick McHenry.
Six Republicans are running for the 6th District seat currently held by Manning. The GOP field includes former Rep. Mark Walker, 2022 congressional candidate Bo Hines and Addison McDowell, a recent entry who received former President Donald Trump's endorsement.
Six GOP candidates also are seeking the nomination in the south-central 8th District that Bishop is leaving and five are running for the nomination in McHenry's reconfigured 10th District, which now ranges from Winston-Salem to counties north and west of Charlotte.
State House Speaker Tim Moore is one of three Republicans seeking the GOP nomination in the 14th District that will stretch from Charlotte west to foothills counties. Jackson is the current 14th District representative.
Republicans appeared all but assured to win the 6th District and 3rd District seats because Democrats failed to field candidates in either race. GOP Rep. Greg Murphy, the 3rd District incumbent, currently only faces a Libertarian challenger.
One state Supreme Court and three Court of Appeals seats, and all 170 General Assembly seats also will be on ballots. Republicans currently hold narrow veto-proof majorities in both the House and Senate.
Several legislators had already announced that they wouldn't seek reelection. Late additions to that list on Friday were Senate Majority Whip Jim Perry of Lenoir County and first-term Democratic Sen. Mary Wills Bode of Granville County.

LATEST NATIONAL AND GLOBAL UPDATES
1. Donald Trump and other Republican presidential candidates urged their supporters to brave icy weather to vote in the Iowa caucuses on Monday. Speaking at a rally in the city of Indianola, Mr Trump said his nomination would send a message “to the entire world”. The former president is the first choice of nearly half of probable Republican caucus-goers, according to polls.
2. North Korea claimed it successfully test-fired a new solid-fuel hypersonic missile. The launch came days after Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s dictator, declared South Korea his country’s “principal enemy”. Meanwhile Choe Son Hui, North Korea’s foreign minister, arrived in Russia for a three-day visit. Western countries accuse North Korea of aiding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by sending ballistic missiles.
3. America launched further strikes against the Houthis, an Iran-backed Yemeni militant group which has been attacking cargo ships in the Red Sea. The new strikes targeted a Houthi radar facility. America and Britain carried out joint attacks against the group early on Friday. Mass demonstrations took place in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital, in response and the Houthis promised to retaliate, saying there would be a “heavy price” for the strikes. They also said that the strikes had been ineffective.
4. Polls closed in Taiwan, after a day of elections for a new president and lawmakers for the country’s parliament. More than 19m people were eligible to cast their votes—which will be counted and tallied by hand over the next few hours. The presidential vote is expected to be close; it has been a tight race between the three candidates contesting the election.
5. Microsoft surpassed Apple to become the world’s most valuable public company. Microsoft was valued at $2.89trn as markets closed on Friday; Apple at $2.87trn. The iPhone-maker has been the most valuable listed firm for most of the past 12 years. But Microsoft’s investments in artificial intelligence have helped it catch up. The software giant last closed above Apple in 2021.
6. Israel delivered its defence at the International Court of Justice against a charge of committing genocide in Gaza. Israel said that the case put forward by South Africa on Thursday presented a “distorted factual and legal picture”, ignoring the lethal attacks which Hamas, a militant group, carried out on October 7th. Israel vehemently denies South Africa’s charge, arguing that it is fighting a war of self-defence.
7. Desi Bouterse, the former dictator and president of Suriname, failed to turn himself in for the 20-year prison sentence he was given last month, after a lengthy appeals process, for involvement in the killing of 15 political opponents in 1982. Mr Bouterse remains chairman of the National Democratic Party, some supporters of which turned up at his house in solidarity. His whereabouts are unknown.
8. The world’s biggest copper supplier, Codelco, reported a drop in output to the lowest level in a quarter of a century. Over the past year, Chile’s state-owned mining giant faced accidents and delays to key upgrades at its mines. Ruben Alvarado, who took over as chief executive last year, hopes that reforms to Codelco’s management will help reverse the company’s fortunes.
9. The World Health Organisation declared Cape Verde free of malaria. The country is only the third in Africa to rid itself of the mosquito-borne disease, after Mauritius in 1973 and Algeria in 2019. Cape Verde’s government launched its malaria action plan in 2007, to diagnose and treat the illness comprehensively, including by offering free services to travellers to the archipelago from mainland Africa.
