Adult Formation in Lent: JOY
Beginning THIS Sunday, March 13

Reading for this Sunday:
Introduction, Arrival, and Day 1 (Pages 1-78) see below for the rest of the schedule.

At first glance, "Joy" may seem an out-of-place focus for Lent. This is the season where we put our "Alleluias" away and remember that we will one day return to the dust. What place does "Joy" have in the midst of the ashes?

His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu would say that "Joy's" place is in the center of the ashes - right in the mix - play and laughter right alongside struggle, loss, and grief. These holy and spiritual leaders invite us to practice joy, and after a pandemic season which has felt like an extended Lent - perhaps now more than ever, we need to practice joy. Only then will we arrive at Easter Day with the fullest "Alleluia!" we can proclaim.

Please join us beginning Sunday, March 13, in Henslee Hall or on Zoom as we prepare for Easter by practicing joy. Be watching for a reading schedule and further details.

READING SCHEDULE:

  • Sunday, March 13 - Introduction, Arrival, and Day 1 (Pages 1-78)
  • Sundays, March 20 & 27 - Days 2 & 3 (Pages 79-188)
  • Sundays, April 3 & 10 - Days 4 & 5, Celebration, & Departure (Pages 189 - 305)

The Book of Joy may be purchased at any of your favorite book sellers.

Miss Ann's Storytime

This weeks story is called Grandmother’s Dream Catcher. It’s a very sweet story that explains what a dream catcher is and how to make and use one. In the end, I talk about how we can use prayer to help us with our worries.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Walk & Eucharist

Sunday, April 3, at 1:00pm

April 4 is the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, martyrdom, so we will remember him on the eve of that anniversary.

We'll gather at the Good Samaritan church sign on Cedar Bluff Rd. at 1:00 PM. Our prayer walk will make its way down Cedar Bluff Rd. to Peace Lutheran Church (621 N. Cedar Bluff Rd.) for an Affirmation of Baptism before returning to Good Samaritan for Holy Eucharist.

Please make plans to join us as we take steps to join God's work of justice and peace.

The Pillowcase Ministry
A Sewing Ministry benefiting Children’s Hospital

In Partnership with St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church

We have been invited - you have been invited - to join in partnership with St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church to become part of this new ministry that benefits Children’s Hospital here in Knoxville.

This new ministry involves sewing very simple pillowcases for the young patients at Children’s Hospital. The pillowcases are easy to make and most importantly help Children’s Hospital provide their young patients with the added level of comfort, love, and care they so need at a difficult time in their lives. Whether you are a seasoned sewer, an occasional sewer or have wished to sew but never have, join us in our partnership project with Children’s Hospital!

Cash in the Plate
March 13

The Cash in the Plate for Sunday, March 6 will go to Episcopal Relief & Development Ukraine Humanitarian Relief.

Ukraine. One word says it all. We’ve watched the war unfold on live television, as we ask ourselves, what can I do when we are so very far away.

Episcopal Relief and Development is mobilizing with Anglican agencies and other partners on the ground on the borders of Poland and Hungary in order to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians fleeing the violence in their country.
Thank you for being agents of healing and hope.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. (Please designate that it is for "ERD-Ukraine" in the memo line).
