Abortion Hurts Men
✡︎ Shabbat Shalom & Good Day ✡︎

My Father loved us very much. He committed his life to providing for his children and family financially, materially, morally and spiritually. I saw him start his busy days standing at his desk praying and reading Torah. He attended services every week and holiday. He was a founding member of our shul, volunteering countless hours maintaining the building, and supporting the Hebrew school and family programming. He actively supported the state of Israel with endless hours of fundraising and trees, trees, trees. In our town, he was respected, trusted, and liked as a citizen, business owner, and Jew, giving our family and Judaism an outstanding reputation.

I was not the easiest daughter to raise, yet, my Father sacrificed much for my well being and gave me a father's unconditional love as well as the discipline I needed to stay safe in a rapidly changing world. When sickness came, I was grateful to return his many kindnesses while honoring and caring for him. I try everyday to bless and respect his memory. I like to imagine him smiling at me and encouraging me as I try to continue his love of Judaism and family.

Challenges to Jewish fatherhood start with legal abortion and the secular attitudes that have made terminating one's child acceptable, even preferable in many circumstances. Abortion robs men of character building and personal integrity. It severs the powerful, guiding, fulfilling connection with HaShem that makes men whole and family life sweet. We mourn with the fathers who regret lost fatherhood. Whether they tried and failed to save their child, or advocated for the abortion and later regretted that fateful decision, we offer healing through our Tikvat Rachel program. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12.

May there be abundant peace from Heaven, and good life upon us and upon all Israel. Amen.

ONE JEW’S LOOK THROUGH JUDAISM AT ABORTION

Prior to the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973, unborn human life was considered by U.S. law worthy of protection. After 1973, it no longer is. We accept that we must not allow any unnecessary killing of what is holy. If holiness is from being created by God, then how can one convincingly defend the idea of any switch from holy to unholy, or the other way around? Similarly, if a woman or girl is permitted by U.S. law to have an abortion — which would mean that whatever is growing inside her is not considered by U.S. law to be holy or worthy of protection — then how, in the eyes of U. S. law, can any magical switch from unholy to holy occur once that baby is completely out of the womb? Only after this magical-type switch does U.S. law protect the baby.
Considering a baby unprotected under civil law while in the womb, but worthy of protection one minute later when fully born is contrary to science. The baby is genetically human all along, whether inside or outside the womb. As an analogy, one could say that the drops of water that fall from the sky may not be called “rain” until the drops hit the ground, but the water drops are rain all along. If the baby's genetics somehow changed after birth, that would be magic. Judaism forbids trust in magic because that is a total denial of truth. God is Truth in the ultimate sense, and Truth is true, whether a person likes it or not.

Prayers for Forgiveness of Abortion

800 Jews were murdered today in Jewish history on 6 Tammuz 1096 (June 16, 2021). Faced with forced conversion to Christianity or death, they chose death. Let us remember these and so many other guiltless Jews, including our unborn children lost from abortion.
We can redeem these martyred souls when we help our fellow Jews choose life saving options when faced with a challenging pregnancy.

The following prayer was created for the martyred souls murdered in the Crusades many years ago. We feel it applies today to the abortion debacle that has destroyed so many innocent children and families. We will never know the extent of the losses.
"The bloods of fathers and sons touched, the bloods of merciful women and their children touched, the bloods of brothers and sisters mixed, the bloods of grooms and brides, wise men and wise women, pious men and pious women, elderly men and women, young men and women, all mingled. O land, do not conceal their blood!"

Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."
