Give Women Equality in Leadership, Urges Tourism Leader
Lauding the focus of International Women’s Day on “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, Nicola Madden-Greig, President of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), said the United Nations theme was particularly apt as COVID-19 wanes in the region because of the special role played by women in guiding Caribbean hospitality and tourism through the pandemic. Thanks to these valiant efforts, the CHTA president, who is the Group Director of Marketing & Sales at The Courtleigh Hospitality Group, reminded that tourism, which employs more women than men, traditionally has been the economic sector that rebounds most quickly after crises, “but the existing inequalities mean that the region is not getting the most out of its major bread earner because women are not being given the leadership responsibilities they so richly deserve.” Madden-Greig, who last year received Jamaica’s prestigious Order of Distinction, contended that while there are a small number of women in leadership positions in tourism, they deliver outstanding results, making effective changes to ensure that the Caribbean tourism product remains among the most desired offerings in the world. Bryan Williams' Tip: Leaders Lead
I always emphasize the importance of the leaders modeling what they want their staff to do. My comments are usually met with vigorously affirmative head-nods and the like. Everyone seems in agreement. Then oftentimes when I check back a week or month later - nothing. It seems that many leaders would much rather fast forward through what THEY have to do, in order to get to the juicy part of what EVERYONE ELSE has to do.

“I need YOU to answer the phone within 3 rings and with a smile.” “I need YOU to proactively follow up with customers.” As leaders, in the pursuit of expecting good habits in everyone else, we cannot ignore, fast-forward or head-nod our way through the most potent ingredient: Am I doing it? Not just every now-and-then when I am in a good mood; but am I doing it consistently. In the same way I expect my staff to do it consistently. Am I walking it? Am I talking it? If not, then I can’t honestly expect my team to consistently do it either.
