DCPS capital improvement updates

CAMBRIDGE — The Dorchester County Board of Education approved three items relating to facilities improvements at a Board of Education meeting Oct. 19.

These include the installation of new security fencing around the playground at Sandy Hill Elementary School, the replacement of HVAC systems at South Dorchester School and the installation of new base and wall cabinets at Hurlock Elementary School.

Dorchester County Public Schools Facilities Planner Chris Hauge said the new cabinets are needed at Hurlock Elementary due to water damage from a flooding incident in the early childhood education classrooms. While the carpets that were ruined have since been replaced, Hauge said new cabinets are still needed.

Residents enthusiastic about CPD environmental design plan

6536b25e0e0db image

CAMBRIDGE — Residents of the Calvin Mowbray Park and Stephen Camper Park community gathered at the housing management office to hear about a plan that would use environmental design to discourage crime in the neighborhood.

Cambridge Police Captain Antoine Patton, who talked about the plan with residents to get their thoughts Oct. 18, told the residents that they live in one of the higher crime areas in Cambridge.

“We have been to Cornish (Drive) and Camelia (Street) over 800 times in the last year and a half,” he said, adding, “I can tell you that the majority of the crime that happens here on your property is not the people that live here.”

Artist Gather in Cambridge for annual Chalk Festival

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Colorful cats, sailing ships and flying fish were just some of the drawings that artists brought to the streets of Cambridge. Dorchester County welcomed artists of all ages to let their creativity flow, for all to see.

The annual Cambridge Chalk Festival encourages artists to come together, to bring vibrancy to city, one chalk line at a time.

17-year-old Daniela Kirby said introducing young people to the world of art can help create a more beautiful community.

“I’m making a chalk drawing– using pastel chalk– of my cat, for the festival,” Kirby said. “It’s important to get little kids into this now, like at such a young age, so that when they grow up, they have these abilities, even if they don’t want to use them professionally,” Kirby added.

Sequoia Arrived in Cambridge

2023CWDI-RichardsonOctPR image

The former presidential yacht Sequoia, covered in shrink wrap, arrived by

barge Monday on the city’s waterfront, where it will become part of the revival of the Richardson Maritime Center’s (Richardson) mission and the region’s boat building history.

The 104-foot motor cruising yacht, once used by presidents ranging from Franklin Roosevelt to Richard Nixon, landed after a five-day journey from Belfast, Maine, where it has been stored on blocks for the past four years.

Workers spent much of the day hauling out the 93-year-old vessel and cradling it on a new bed of beams and blocks on the Richardson site on Cambridge Creek, where it is slated for renovations and display.

Although the detailed plans for the wooden hull ship are still being finalized, Richardson officials expressed delight at the opportunity to participate in the revitalization of this historic ship.

“We see this as a huge benefit to Richardson’s mission, and a kick start to the maritime trades in the area,” said Martin Hardy, Board Chairman of the Richardson Maritime Center at 103 Hayward St. in Cambridge.

2023CoastalHospiceSurvivorOutreachBereavementServicesSOBSFLYER image

Salisbury, MD – November 1, 2023 – Coastal Hospice now offers grief support to family and friends of loved ones who have lost their lives due to an overdose death. This is a FREE program, focused on providing grief support and resources to the four counties we serve, whether or not you were supported by Coastal Hospice directly.

Alvin Harmon, SOBS Program Coordinator explained, “With this program, families from the four counties we serve will be able to receive specialized grief support for the loss of a loved one related to an overdose death. Alvin adds, “When a death of this nature happens in a family, it is often sudden, traumatic, and can be surrounded by stigma for survivors. Our goal is to provide them with a safe space to process these losses and offer them resources to help them develop coping skills to deal with grief.”

Meals til Monday Fundraiser Extravaganza

We're saying "thank you" first!

Imagine that an organization was able to give out over $400,000 worth of food to residents of Dorchester County at no cost; well, that's just what meals til Monday was able to do in 2022! Until January of this year, the Maryland food Bank allowed us to "purchase" food at no charge by using Federal Covid funds to cover the cost. That's nearly half a million pounds of food! Unfortunately, now we have to pay to help our children and friends in the community who desperately need food assistance.

Meals til Monday will present our very first fundraising event on November 10th, 2023 at Breckenridge Barn in Linkwood. This "Night of Giving" will raise funds to provide even more food for our community.

Please plan to join us, to donate, or to sponsor.

All that Glitters: A Women's Metalsmith Collective Reception

This eclectic group of women met while taking classes in metalwork at Charmtree Jewelry Studio in Stevensville which is owned by Melissa Kay, one of the exhibitors. While they come from many different backgrounds and careers, they have found their bliss in jewelry-making and glass work.

It was early in 2022 that local artist, Linda Starling, who is a member of Main Street Gallery and who specializes in beach glass and silver jewelry, envisioned a holiday show at MSG with her Charmtree classmates. She says that after taking classes and working alongside all seven women and watching them grow not only in artistry but in friendship, she thought a show together might be an exciting next step. That first show was so successful that the artists decided to try it again and are happy to show together once more. Linda explains that these classmates have become an important network for her and each other. They routinely share ideas and new techniques and while working together they continually challenge each other. The extra added bonus, she says, has been the lasting friendships they have formed. Through their classes the artists have learned or improved upon their skills in fabrication, metal clay, soldering, enameling and more and all have continued in their education taking online classes and traveling to learn from some of the best in the jewelry industry.

Main Street Gallery is open Thursdays through Sundays from 11 to 5 and online shopping is always available at: mainstgallery.net. The gallery is located at 518 Poplar St. and is Cambridge‘s only artist-owned and operated cooperative. The gallery is currently reviewing work from prospective members and guest artists. Please contact them through their website or by calling 410–330–4659 if you are interested in being part of this vibrant artist community.
