Infantile Spasms
Exploring Potential Collaborations to Improve Outcomes
|
|
Infantile Spasms (IS) is a unique early-life epilepsy with heterogenous etiologies, few treatment options, and significant developmental consequences.
- Children with infantile spasms have a high risk of developing intellectual disabilities later in life.
- Even without an underlying brain disorder or injury, children with IS are at risk of developmental delays and intellectual disabilities.

The HNC offers a full range of customizable services to investigators. These encompass patient sample procurement to generate iPSCs, differentiation of neurons, development of phenotypic models, and small molecule screening to identify compounds that modulate identified phenotypes.
With advances in iPSC technology, neurological disease modeling in a dish is now a physiologically relevant platform for advancing drug discovery in neuroscience.
Learning new methods for iPSC culturing can be challenging, time consuming, and cost prohibitive. The HNC seeks to facilitate your research efforts by 1) helping to set up platforms for labs who have yet to discover iPSC research, and 2) supporting labs with ongoing projects that need bandwidth assistance or reproducible access to neurons.

Sartorius IncuCyteS3 live imager
|
The Sartorius IncuCyteS3 is a microscope housed within an incubator for live imaging. The instrument can hold 6 plates simultaneously and can image in bright field, green, and red fluorescent wavelengths. Imaging is set up with a user-friendly software interface so imaging can occur day or night on a pre-defined schedule without user intervention.

The Molecular Devices IXM-C is a powerful high content imaging instrument with confocal capabilities and a 7-color laser. The IXM-C can image multiple plate and slide formats and contains a live imaging chamber to control temperature and CO2 conditions for live cells. This microscope is connected to a spinnaker robot and hoteling incubator to enable screening of multiple plates without user interaction after initial setup.

Meet our Investigators | Carol Wilkinson
|
|
Dr. Carol Wilkinson's lab is interested in understanding the neural mechanisms impairing language acquisition and cognitive development in children, especially those with disorders associated with intellectual disabilities.
Dr. Wilkinson's fascination with the brain has extended far beyond the lab into epic craft-making with her son.
