June 21 Greetings

You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

-Joseph Goldstein

It would seem we spend the majority of our lives in a state of adjustment. Although this is true, we find ourselves constantly searching for stability and sameness. Within this paradox of life, we discover the Christ, who is the “same yesterday, today and tomorrow” (Hebrews 13:8).

If the metaphor is true, that the waves of life will continue to flow, we do indeed need the best surf instructor possible. Following the One who navigated through life’s joys and sorrows as we all do, surrounded by people who sometimes adored him, and sometimes let him down - - we know we have Someone we can go to who understands our plight.

As the temperatures around us grow hotter, the winds grow stronger and the divisions among us grow deeper, we are called to step out of the proverbial boat in faith. For it is not the boat that will save us, but the One who calls to us from the storm out on the water.

As my family and I prepare to move back east, we are filled some days with excitement, and other days with anxiety. Leaving the things we know - the doctors, dentists, church, jobs, friends and grocery stores - is not easy as we face the task ahead of finding new people and places to trust. In hindsight, God has always provided for us, and so that helps us as we move forward into new circumstances. And we know that our calling is to ask, seek and knock, and then those doors will eventually open to us.

Here at ELC, our LGTBQIA+ task force has renamed itself: we are now the “Inclusivity Team”! As the title implies, we intend to explore the height, depth and breadth of ways our church can practice and support hospitality here and everywhere. This Team has set the following goals:

  • Provide regular input into the Church emailed newsletters - teachable moments to educate the congregation about the unique needs, new terminology and current events around the world and how we as ELCA Christians can live out our calling
  • Provide educational moments in worship 1x/month, including video, testimony and examples of hospitality practices

Gene Fougner will be the interim facilitator of the group, which is hopeful and receptive to new members to join us on the journey!

Our Pre-School task force also continues to ask, seek and knock as we explore possibilities here at ELC. We have made some initial contacts with the city and local school district as well as with Grand Canyon Synod congregations of whom already have pre-schools up and running. Contact Larry Mahler if you’re interested in participating in this task force as well!

As we head out on our 4-day trek to Michigan this week, we seek your supportive prayers for our safety, and for the encouragement of the Spirit to engage with our new congregation and neighborhood. Please know that your love, grace and hospitality has made a significant impact in our lives, and we leave knowing we’ll see each other again…either in this life, or the next….!

Please stay in touch! Here's our new address:

Lilyan was a trusted landing spot for these beautiful creatures.....who remind us that new life comes from letting go of the old life.
