Studies have shown that people with “Black-sounding” names are less likely to be considered for a job, compared with white applicants. Now, new research reveals that employers aren't the only ones engaging in this type of discrimination. It's happening in housing, too.

Housing providers routinely request verification for reasonable accommodations from a care provider or from another reliable third party in a position to know about the tenant’s disability. Care providers and reliable third parties may include, but are not limited to, physicians, mental or behavioral health professionals, social workers, case managers, family members, coworkers, etc. This resource is intended to offer guidance to those in the process of providing reasonable accommodation verifications.

About Fair Housing Center for Rights & Research

The Fair Housing Center for Rights & Research (The Fair Housing Center) is a nonprofit fair housing organization whose mission is to protect and expand fair housing rights, eliminate housing discrimination, and promote integrated communities. The Fair Housing Center has been in existence for 35 years, beginning as the Metropolitan Strategy Group in 1983.
 
The federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 prohibits discrimination in the sale or rental of a dwelling on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or disability. The purpose of the law is to eliminate housing discrimination and promote residential integration.
