Cardshark Scramblers and Strokes of Luck in the Scramble Open at Pinehurst – May 28 - 29
Congratulations to the Cardshark Scramblers and the Strokes of Luck, our amazing representatives from LPGA Amateurs - Northern NJ Chapter at the LPGA Amateurs Scramble Open, held on May 28th and 29th at the historic Pinehurst Resort.  Both teams competed among the best and had outstanding performances.
Always a strong scramble team, Jane Egan, Mindy Oosten, Annette Owens and Karen Stepsus of the Cardshark Scramblers once again brought their “A” game, finishing 3rd in their fight and 13th overall in the field of 66 teams. Playing in competition for the first time together as a scramble team, the Strokes of Luck foursome of Fern Chan, Susan Nostrame, Janet Solberg and Jan Tomasiewicz also had a terrific showing, as they finished 4th in their flight and 23rd overall!
Fellow chapter member Pat MacIsaac rounded out our representatives from Northern NJ, cheering on our ladies and partaking in golf and fun throughout the trip. In the words of Jane Egan “Eight days in a golfers paradise with great friends was a priceless experience.” We bet it was!!

League Coordinator Spotlight
Meet League Coordinator Jane Barone!
This month’s spotlight features Jane Barone, coordinator of the Tuesday evening 9-hole league at Deer Run in Lincoln Park, NJ.  Jane hails from Short Hills, NJ in Essex County and has been a member of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of EWGA/LPGA Amateurs since its inception in 1994.

Jane began golfing when she was 40 years old, after noting that everyone in the law firm she was working with played golf. She asked her nephew, who was on the local golf team, to take her to the Par 3 in Millburn and was instantly hooked! We have Jane’s husband, Frank, to thank for introducing her to the EWGA, as he saw Laurie Lions, first President of EWGA-NNJ, talking about EWGA on a public broadcasting station and told her about it.

In addition to Deer Run, Jane has also coordinated past leagues at the Meadows.  She decided to be a league coordinator because of her love for the organization and wanted to give back. She particularly enjoys the great opportunities LPGA Amateurs provides to play golf and make new friends, and she has taken numerous golf trips with LPGA Amateur friends. Some of the fun destinations she has traveled to with her golf buddies include St. Andrews, Pebble Beach and Florida. When not playing golf Jane really enjoys her work as a legal nurse consultant. Those of you who already know Jane may be surprised to discover that she has a twin sister!  Her name is Janet, but she does not golf.

To those women who have never played golf, but who might be interested in getting started Jane offers this advice: “Join LPGA Amateurs and jump in!”  We totally agree!! Thank you Jane, for all you do and continue to do for our organization.

Focus on Rules
Golf's New Rules: Major Changes related to searching for a ball

New Rule: Under Rule 18.2, the time for a ball search (before the ball becomes lost) has been reduced from 5 minutes to 3 minutes.
Reasons for Change:
  • Limiting the search period to 3 minutes is more consistent with the underlying principle that golf is to be played in a prompt and continuous way, without long pauses in play.
  • In most cases, if the ball is going to be found, it will be found within the first 3 minutes.
  • Although this change may increase the number of lost balls, on average the overall impact should be to speed up play.
  • Knowing that the search time is limited to 3 minutes should encourage players to play a provisional ball when they believe there is a chance their ball may not be found.
VIDEO: https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/rules-modernization/infographics/major-change--reduced-search-time-for-a-lost-ball.html#expanded

New Rule: Under Rule 7.4, if a player accidentally moves his or her ball while searching for it:
  • The player gets no penalty for causing it to move, and
  • The ball is always replaced; if the exact spot is not known, the player will replace the ball on the estimated original spot (including on, under or against any attached natural or man-made objects which the ball had been at rest under or against).
Reasons for Change:
A fundamental principle of golf is to play the ball as it lies; so the Rules should help the player to find his or her ball and play it from the spot where it was at rest.
Players often need to probe in grass, bushes, leaves and other conditions to look for a hidden ball, and such reasonable acts create an inherent risk of moving the ball.
The previous Rules allowed both an opponent in match play, and other players in stroke play, to help search for the player’s ball without risk of penalty if they accidentally moved the player’s ball. Outside persons such as spectators were allowed to help search as well.
It was inconsistent to encourage everyone but the player or his or her caddie (or partner) to look for the ball, and this created an odd incentive for the player to hold back and let others search.
