Fuel Cost Saving Tips
As Spring Break approaches for many this coming week, the high gas prices might cause some to consider adjusting their travel plans. The national average is currently hovering around $4.33 for a regular gallon of gas according to AAA, with Texas averaging about $4.01 per gallon, and Travis County at about $4 per gallon. While this may create some anxiety at the pump, there are some simple tips offered from energy.gov that could help improve your gas mileage and help you save on future fuel costs:

  • Minimize idling in your car by turning off your engine when your vehicle is parked for more than 10 seconds (idling can use a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour).
  • Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration and hard braking (which can lower your highway gas mileage by 15% - 30%).
  • Reduce drag by placing items inside your car or trunk, rather than on roof racks (which can decrease your fuel economy on highways by about 25%).
  • Avoid keeping heavy items in your car (an extra 100lbs could increase gas costs by up to $.03 per gallon).
  • Combine errands (several short trips can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance).
  • Check into telecommuting, carpooling, biking or walking to save on fuel and car maintenance costs.
