As the fall quarter gets under way, we hope that you will carve out some time to consider your research funding and proposal plans for the academic year. As part of your planning process, please notify Chad Morris, Senior Director, Research Development and Sponsored Programs, and me about your future proposal submission plans in advance, no matter how concrete those plans are at this point in time. This helps us help you get your submissions in on time. Feel free to send us a calendar invite with the deadline date or drop us an e-mail to let us know your plans. The more we know about your plans, the better we can offer support and services to help you put forth the best possible proposals.
Also, don’t forget about our Writer’s Workshop when planning your proposal submission timelines!
Caroline Schauer, PhD

New Teaching and Learning Site Launches
The new Teaching and Learning Center site is live. The goal of the new website is to facilitate navigation and better highlight TLC’s workshops, programs, services, and resources. Check back often, as TLC will add new workshops and resources throughout the year.
Panelists Sought for SWE Lives and Lessons Conference
The Drexel Society of Women Engineers will host their annual Lives and Lessons conference virtually on Saturday, November 6. The goal of the Lives & Lessons conference is to raise the voices of those who are underrepresented in their field and to spread awareness of some of the challenges they face. SWE is seeking panelists for the conference who can share anecdotes, provide facts and information, express their points of view, motivate, inspire, and reveal the truth that minorities in engineering face real problems that no individual can solve on their own. Those interested in serving on a panel can fill out SWE’s interest form.
Updated MarCom Guide
The College of Engineering Marketing and Communications (MarCom) team helps tell the incredible stories of student success, faculty expertise, alumni engagement and everything else that makes Drexel Engineering special. For information on how to best get your news out there to all the different audiences that MarCom serves, please refer to the newly updated MarCom Guide. There you can find tips and procedures for advertising, storytelling, social media and more. We look forward to working with you!
CONGRATULATIONS
Christopher Li, PhD, professor of materials science and engineering, along with Co-PIs Marina Potapova, PhD (CoAS/ANS - BEES); Vibha Kalra, PhD, professor of chemical and biological engineering; Lin Han (Biomed) and Craig Johnson, Director of Operations, Materials Characterization Core (MCC) are the recipients of a two-year NSF grant, “MRI: Acquisition of an advanced scanning electron microscope for in situ and in operando materials characterization and education.” The grant will provide Drexel with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope (SEM) designed for advanced imaging and analysis, replacing an out-of-date SEM, and having a positive long-term impact on the research community.
Additionally, Li is a Co-PI on a second grant with lead institution University of Pennsylvania, “FMRG: Eco: Sustainable Route to 3D Solid-State Sodium-ion Battery by Direct Ink Writing and Capillary Rise Infiltration,” awarded through NSF’s Future Eco Manufacturing program. The four-year project focuses on new manufacturing routes for sodium-ion batteries.
Gail Rosen, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, is the recipient of a three-year NSF grant, “III: Small: Learning Multi-scale Sequence Features for Predicting Gene to Microbiome Function.” Attributing which “configurations” of organisms and/or genes contribute to a particular “microbiome state” can help to predict disease, understand how the environment may change microbial ecosystems, and be able to predict future changes of these systems (e.g. perturbations due to a chemical, temperature, etc.). This project will develop a recurrent neural network that can learn both community-level changes in the microbiome and genetic changes that relate to microbiome phenotypes. This technology has the potential to improve agriculture, environmental monitoring, and personalized medicine, among others.
