Message from the Executive Director

I joined County Executive Pittman’s team when he was elected in 2018 and have seen first-hand the impact of public testimony on his budget priorities and decisions. This is your time to speak up. Whether you advocate for a specific community need or for resources that impact a larger sector like nonprofits, your voice matters. He listens. Check out the advocacy tips below along with the resources, updates, and opportunities that you’ll find in Nonprofit News each month. We look forward to working with you in 2024!

Community Support Grants

The County's FY2025 Community Support Grant (CSG) application portal is now open! This year, the County Executive has allocated approximately $2 million in funds to support local nonprofits. Similar to previous years, the grants will be administered by Arundel Community Development Services.

Though there is some flexibility as to how the CSG grants can be used, applicants are encouraged to consider program/project support, one-time projects, or small equipment purchases. The review team will prioritize proposals which support at least one of the following:

  • Providing services to underserved populations
  • Addressing the health and well-being of communities
  • Promoting equity and inclusion
  • Eliminating the Opportunity Gap in education

Only 501(c)(3) organizations that enrich the lives of Anne Arundel County residents and communities will be considered. We encourage you to attend the virtual training on January 18, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. The training will also be recorded and posted to the website if you cannot attend. The application is hosted on the Neighborly portal. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one HERE. The application deadline is February 22, 2024.

Detailed information, program guidelines, and a list of previous grant recipients are available on our website. If you have questions, please email eHarig-Blaine@acdsinc.org

Nonprofits and the County Budget

You know the challenges of creating annual budgets. You probably fret over how to grow revenue to meet current needs. We do, too. Creating the county budget is never easy because of uncertain revenue, mandated expenses, and a very long list of external demands. But, County Executive Pittman listens to his constituents. That’s why he holds multiple town halls each year well before any budget decisions are made.

The COVID pandemic necessitated that we (the County and nonprofits) meet greater needs, and we had federal funds to support those needs. Those funds have been depleted, yet community needs have not returned to pre-pandemic levels. That is why the county increased funding for the Community Support Grant program and created the Nonprofit Center (NPC) before federal American Rescue Plan funds ran out.

The County can no longer support all nonprofit organizations financially at the same level it did during the pandemic. It can, however, provide organizations with capacity-building opportunities to help diversify and grow the funds needed to better fulfill their missions.

That’s where the NPC comes in. If the NPC has helped your organization or can help you in the future, tell us how and tell us now. Hearing from the community and the organizations that serve our communities makes a difference when it comes to our annual funding. If you’re unsure how to advocate for funding, the Office of Community Engagement and Constituent Services hosted a webinar last week and created a budget testimony checklist and presentation to help. Both are available at https://www.aacounty.org/openarundel/yourbudget/budget-toolkit. County Executive Pittman also highlighted the effort in his last weekly letter

Check out the list of Budget Town Halls HERE and please engage through participation or providing written testimony if you can. Advocacy is one of many ways you can help make Anne Arundel County The Best Place - For All.

New Year, New Plan

home_keys_planning.jpg

When was the last time you revisited your organization’s strategic plan? Last year? A few years ago? Ever? How about this for a New Year's resolution? Commit to looking at your plan to see if you are on track and make some updates if needed. You don't have to start from scratch, and there are a lot of reasons to have an updated plan.

Funding for Good lists just a few of the many benefits:

  1. Save time by getting the board and staff aligned
  2. Save money with smarter spending focused on core goals
  3. Get your team invested and increase productivity
  4. Boost your impact with actionable strategies
  5. Raise more money when you can demonstrate your impact
  6. Kickstart strategic decision-making

Ten local nonprofits were recently selected to participate in the NPC's spring strategic planning cohort to learn how to write a strategic plan. We will share highlights from the course and additional resources over the next few months. In the meantime, here are a few resources to check out online.
