#LookItUp: Dr. Lowell challenges family medicine to solve the transgender humanitarian crisis

“The only way to start treating transgender patients it to start treating transgender patients,” said Dr Izzy Lowell, founder of Queermed and the first plenary speaker of the FMEC Annual Meeting. Transgender care is under attack, with dozens of states passing partial or total bans on care. Dr. Lowell found her way to family medicine because she “wanted to be someone’s doctor,” and she was driven to start Queermed by the struggles she saw transgender patients and their families experiencing. She shared her efforts to treat patients across the country who must travel from their home communities to get or continue care. Gender-affirming care and hormone therapy are not complicated medically – simpler, for example, than managing diabetes, and type 1 diabetes is about as common as being transgender. Yet many physicians do not provide this care. When they say “I wasn’t taught that in school,” Dr. Lowell’s solution is “look it up!” Her lectures about gender-affirming care may spend five minutes on treatment, but an hour on dealing with anxiety, concern about misgendering someone, understanding state laws, and similar issues. Students, residents and faculty were awed and challenged by her talk.

FMEC and GUSI teach POCUS to nearly 60 attendees



The FMEC collaborated with the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI), founded by family physicians, to offer two preconferences to provide hands-on experience on POCUS basics as well as a selection of specific techniques. Morning plenary: Don’t miss the morning plenary session starting at 7:45am! Dr. Renee Crichlow will present “We Got This Family Medicine,” stressing the value and need for Family Medicine as a specialty in light of the recent pandemic, social upheaval, and more. Dr. Crichlow is Chief Medical Officer of Codman Square Health Center in Boston; the Vice-chair of Health Equity at the Boston University Department of Family Medicine; the medical editor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the journal, American Family Physician; and the current President of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Program coordinator’s networking group: On Saturday, from Noon-2pm, the FMEC has arranged for a room for program coordinators and other GME program staff to have an informal networking meeting. Boxed lunches will be available to all on the 5^th Floor in the foyer, then join the Program Coordinator's Networking Meeting in the Providence Room, 4^th Floor in the Convention Center.

Dine Around with Brown Faculty – Tonight at 6pm: For those residents and faculty who do not need to staff their Residency Fair booth, we’ve organized a few small dinners with faculty members at Brown University at 6pm. Go to the sign up sheet at the registration desk to see the faculty, topics and locations and choose to join a dinner. The dinners are self-pay and at casual restaurants. Medical students should not sign up as they will be at the Residency Fair.
