Studio Tip - How You Hangin'?

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

We get a lot of questions and comments after each BobBlast and we thank you for that! One question that always seems to come up is… “In the studio, when you look at your painting, how do you temporarily hang them on the wall?”

After many years of pounding too many nails and pins all over the studio walls, I paid attention to the problem. Since you asked, this is my solution.

My Hanging Method - I determined it had to be quick and easy, with no tools required. Once I get to the point where I need to just look at a painting I am working on - I hang it on the wall. I have found that hanging your artwork away from the area you created it can give you a fresher environment in which to study it, critique it and envision it hanging in a gallery or museum.

Hanging Method #1 - If you prefer no tack or pushpin holes in the corners of your watercolor paper, you tape the back side. I use a two inch wide brown paper box tape, rolling it back on itself to make a sticky tube. This hardware store tape is strong enough to hold heavy watercolor paper on the studio wall. You won’t need much of it - a three inch strip is enough to roll it into a tube, stick it on the back of the painting, then temporarily stick it on the wall. Note: I have found that those pretty and colorful Frog Tapes are not as strong as the brown paper shipping box tape. So no green, yellow, blue, purple tape for hanging your artwork.

Hanging Method #2 - For hanging a light-weight wired canvas, I use all standard nails and long, heavy duty push pins. To avoid random holes all over the pristine walls, I have permanently covered one wall in my studio with 4x8 foot sheets of foam board, gatorboard or half-inch thick homasote wall panels. Easy enough for push pins and nails and strong enough to hold the light-weigh wired canvases and panels.

Hanging Method #3 - For hanging the larger, heavier canvases and wood panels, I have a separate, dedicated wall that has four horizontal rows of 1x2 inch soft pine strips screwed permanently into the wall. These strips are at various heights to accommodate different painting sizes. The nails go right into the wood strips - keeping your studio walls NOT looking like Swiss cheese. Watch the video to see all three hanging methods.

Hang in there!
