WTAMU Homecoming King and Queen

Students from ag and the arts were named West Texas A&M University’s 2023 Homecoming Queen and King on Oct. 14.

Rylee Finley, a junior agricultural media and communication major from Amarillo, and Amon Fredinand, a sophomore dance major from Amarillo, were crowned at halftime of WT’s victorious game against Western New Mexico University in the culmination of a week’s worth of Homecoming activities.

Finley, who represented Students Assisting in Good Endeavors, and Fredinand, who represented the WT Spirit Squad, were the top vote-getters among a field of 25 nominees from across campus.

‘I Am WT’ Podcast Returns

New “I Am WT” hosts Myka Bailey, a junior PR/advertising/applied communication major from Abernathy, and Thomas Rodriguez, a junior digital media and communication major from Katy, interview Dolores Neal Thompson, who recently was honored at the WT Office for Engaged Citizenship’s Celebration of Color during Homecoming Week.

The episode is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and SoundCloud, as well as at wtamu.edu/IAmWTPodcast.

Thompson is an Amarillo native and daughter of Helen and Nathaniel Neal; her mother was the first Black graduate of WT, and her father was the first Black faculty member.

The “I Am WT” podcast embodies WT’s commitment to people first, one of the key principles of the University’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.

That plan is fueled by the historic, $125 million One West comprehensive fundraising campaign. To date, the campaign — which publicly launched in September 2021— has raised more than $125 million and will continue through 2025.

In the biweekly episodes of “I Am WT,” student hosts interview WT faculty, staff, students and alumni about what WT means to them.

Silent Film Accompaniment by WT Orchestra

A silent Buster Keaton film gets new life in an upcoming screening with the West Texas A&M University Symphony Orchestra.

Keaton’s classic “The General” will be screened with live orchestral accompaniment at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 at the La Rita Performing Arts Theatre, 311 Denrock Ave. in Dalhart. Admission is free.

The film also will be screened for members of The Arts at WT: A Subscription Series at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in Legacy Hall in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center on WT’s Canyon campus. Membership is required but can be purchased at the event for a pro-rated cost.

In the heyday of silent films, movie theaters would provide live musical accompaniment, ranging from a piano in a small theater to a full orchestra in large theaters in major metropolitan areas.

"She Kills Monsters"

A young woman’s quest to understand her sister—and to fight monsters alongside her—is at the heart of the latest drama from West Texas A&M University Theatre.

“She Kills Monsters” by Qui Nguyen will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 to 28 and Nov. 2 to 4, and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 in the Happy State Bank Studio Theatre in WT’s Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex.

Agnes (Leighson Selman, a senior musical theatre major from Amarillo) is a 20-something high school English teacher whose younger sister, Tilly (Signe Elder, a senior musical theatre major from Lubbock), dies tragically.

“That compels Agnes to investigate Tilly’s life and get to know her in a way she didn’t get to while Tilly was alive,” said director Stephen Crandall, professor of theatre in WT’s Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities. “She stumbles across a Dungeons & Dragons module that Tilly created and convinces a dungeon master friend of Tilly’s to let her play it.”
