With the rush of the holidays behind us it is time for Christmas vacation at SusanvilleStuff! Our offices will be closed until January 2nd as we take some time off to try and get ready for a spectacular New Year.

We will still be here to cover breaking news or stories that are important, plus we will still have some daily features like Smith Properties weather, LMUD’s This Day in History and other assorted year-end goodies we have planned for you.

Have a wonderful week everybody and we will see you again next year! Happy 2024!

CHP Warns Drivers to Drive

Safely as We Head Into 2024

As we prepare to usher in a new year, the California Highway Patrol is ramping up efforts to help ensure the safety of all road users, while reducing the number of deadly crashes on the state’s roadways.

Beginning at 6:01p.m. this evening, December 29th, the CHP will implement a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period, which will continue through 11:59p.m. on Monday, January 1st.

The CHP conducted a similar enforcement effort during the recent Christmas holiday.

Tragically, twenty people were killed in crashes within CHP jurisdiction between 6:01p.m. on Friday, Dec. 22nd, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 25th. Additionally, CHP officers made more than 900 arrests for driving under the influence – an average of one every five minutes.

“Our personnel work through the holidays to help ensure people arrive safely at their destinations,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee.

“The goal is to maintain a safe environment on California’s roads, which is achievable when all motorists make responsible decisions behind the wheel.”

In addition to assisting drivers and looking for traffic violations, such as failure to wear a seat belt, speeding, and distracted driving, CHP officers will be paying close attention to people suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

During the last New Year’s Day MEP, CHP officers made 570 DUI arrests statewide.

As we close out 2023, avoid becoming a statistic. Have a plan and designate a sober driver or use ride-share services, avoid distractions while driving, and always wear your seat belt. If you see or suspect an impaired driver, call 9-1-1 immediately. Be prepared to provide the dispatcher a description of the vehicle, the license plate number, location, and direction of travel. Your phone call may save someone’s life.

The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

Susanville Flier Lands on St. Louis Street Crossing

December 29, 1943

Chief test pilot John E. A. Allen of Susanville, California, ran out of gas over St. Louis yesterday and landed neatly in the middle of the intersection of Jamieson and Loughborough Avenues, near the edge of town. There were no injuries.

Allen left Bloomington, Ill., about 120 miles away, earlier in the day accompanied by two other planes en route to Susanville. He said he did not know what became of his two flying escorts.

Allen, employed by the Defense Plant Corporation in Washington, was flying a navy 3n3n plane when he was forced down.

The plane’s only damage was a ruffled landing wheel.
