NHR Compassion Portugal

NHR Compassion Portugal is an initiative focused on responding to the COVID-19 crisis and specifically assisting those in most need of help during the crisis. By partnering with established charities with a pre-existing and COVID-19 compliant structure to provide the help, this compassion project aims to deliver results as quickly and efficiently as possible in these very challenging times.

Non-Habitual Residents have benefitted significantly from the Portuguese NHR program and they have already contributed substantially to the Portuguese economy through payment of indirect taxation, supporting the local economy and service industries, setting up business and business associations. This project shows their desire and willingness to support some of those in Portuguese society in most need of help at this unique and critical moment.

The founders of NHR Compassion moved both by the social disaster occurring in Portugal as a consequence of COVID19, and by the work that Banco Alimentar https://www.bancoalimentar.pt/homepage/ has been developing in that front, have decided to channel the proceeds of their efforts to this Institution.

Portugal has a population of roughly 10 million. In terms of food needs, during the last weeks, 12.000 additional families (roughly 40.000 people) have requested help of Banco Alimentar, on top of 400.000 people already benefiting from its current support. The Banco Alimentar campaign which should have taken place in May throughout the national chain of supermarkets has been cancelled, therefore leaving a void in the stocks of 21 Banco Alimentar units throughout continental Portugal, Madeira and Açores. One million Portuguese citizens survive with €250 a month or less per month, two million have a monthly income of €450 or less. Covid19 brought a different and tragic dimension to those in need, and a wave of middle and low middle-class people who had never before experienced poverty and hunger.

Strong membership participation means a stronger voice in the national Portuguese-American agenda. In order to advance Portuguese language education, increase presence in the congressional caucuses, and provide economic opportunities, the collective voice of thousands is needed!

In addition, PALCUS is a member-driven non-profit organization that depends on membership dues and fundraising events to fund its operations.  Members of the all-volunteer board of directors donate their time and personal funds for travel, lodging and tickets to attend networking events and planning sessions so our administrative costs are relatively low but nonetheless critical to doing business on a daily basis.

There are membership categories to suit every budget and level of interest.  Please click on our membership webpage and join our voice today!
