From the Director
Despite our best efforts, we still faced major COVID-related staff shortages this week requiring us to close for two days.  Thank you for understanding, and for the bevy of substitute applications we have received from our community!  We are working through the processes of onboarding new substitutes, which will help us maintain classes when teachers need to be out.  Thank you!

The herculean efforts of our teachers and staff members who have pulled out the stops to cover each other’s classes and recess duties, to fill in as assistants and paras, and to fill in at the front desk is simply awe-inspiring.  These are incredibly tough times for educators throughout the country, and I am so proud and honored to be working with these amazing souls.  If you have a moment to thank them and share your appreciation, it would be especially meaningful right now.

We also extend huge thanks to our board members for their tireless efforts on behalf of the school, with special gratitude to Binah Reiss and Patrick Cush who volunteered to cover the front desk this week as well.

We have so many parent volunteers who are attending and leading school committees, helping in the classroom, and chaperoning field trips.  In light of the stress that families are also experiencing, we are moved by your dedication to the success of our school.  Thank you so much!

Ever the optimist, I am hopeful that this latest wave of COVID that has hit so hard marks the beginning of the end of the pandemic.  We shall see.

Thank you for sharing with each other the love and care of Mountain Song.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Reporting Student Absences
Covid and Non-Covid Related

Due to the increased number of absences and Covid related reportings, we ask that you please use our online reporting forms that are also available on our Mountain Song homepage

All Absences: Please use this Daily Attendance Form.

If your child tests positive or has been exposed to a positive COVID case, we have a new Online COVID Questionnaire that we ask you to please fill out.  This will help us be more efficient.

If your children have been exposed in the home or develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, congestion, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, increased fatigue, or vomiting, please keep them home and fill out the above forms immediately.  COVID cases range in severity from no symptoms to all of the above-listed symptoms.  Keeping children home when there is any indication of illness or exposure helps decrease the risk to others.

COVID Test Kits
Thank you to everyone in our community for continuing to make best efforts to minimize the spread of COVID.  Consider ordering COVID at home test kits to have on hand in the case anyone in your family has been in close contact with, or who may be showing symptoms of COVID.

These can be purchased through www.covidtests.gov

Alliance for Public Waldorf Education Conference
Over the MLK holiday weekend, our teachers, administrators and board members gathered with others online in the spirit of renewal and unity for the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education’s Annual Conference.  With sessions addressing Waldorf teaching during COVID, the arts as a necessity, digital literacy, cultural knowledge and inclusion, and student support services, we discovered new perspectives to bring back into the classrooms of Mountain Song.  In small groups, we delved deeper into themes such as book binding, form drawing, music, restorative justice, eurythmy, handwork, and talked about how to manage screen time with compassion and flexibility as well as how to truly be a culturally responsive, inclusive school.  We also gained insights and inspiration from famed Waldorf educators like Dr. Liz Beaven, Jack Petrash, and Jeff Lough, who discussed how we serve our students in the midst of so much uncertainty.
