Village Council Candidate Forum
BHA will hold a Village Council Candidate Forum on Monday, October 11, 2021, from 3:00-5:00pm in Generator Society Hall at its Association Center (111 Lighthouse Wynd, Bald Head Island). The event will be livestreamed and recorded. It is also intended to be open to the public, following current COVID safety protocols mandated by North Carolina’s Department of Health and the CDC. The decision on whether to allow an in-person audience will be made by October 6, based on positive COVID rates in Brunswick County and on Bald Head Island (if possible). If safety protocols prohibit allowing a live audience, the event will be livestreamed and recorded only.
The forum will be broken into two sessions — the first for council candidates and the second for mayoral candidates — with a 5-minute break in-between.
The League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Lower Cape Fear will manage the forum, as well as collect and organize questions for the candidates prior to the event, using unique and private email addresses. The event will be moderated by Dr. Raymonde Kleinberg, Chair of the Public and International Affairs Department at UNC-Wilmington.
Thank you to property owners who submitted their "Top 5 Topics" to BHA. The main topics included:
- Transportation/Ferry System
- Infrastructure (road conditions, sustainability, water and sewer systems, improve medians, large number of ICE vehicles and their impacts, etc.)
- Inclusion of property owners who do not vote here
- Future (balance increased development with preserving BHI's natural habitat features, 20-year vision, plans for making the vision a reality, etc.)
- Other (rental schedules, addressing renter bad behavior, day-trippers, taxes, promoting an active approach to preserving the culture and environment of BHI with rental agencies and property managers, etc.)
Send your specific questions for candidates to address at the forum to the LWV by Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Questions for council candidates can be emailed to bhi2021council@gmail.com, and questions for mayoral candidates can be emailed to bhi2021mayor@gmail.com. Please do not send candidate questions to BHA.
We encourage you to share this announcement so that everyone has a chance to voice their questions. For general election questions and information, visit the Brunswick County Board of Elections HERE.
