The Mayor administered the Oath of Office to Adam Kaduce at the Council Meeting on Tuesday, January 12. Kaduce has been temporarily appointed to the City Council to fill the role of Councilmember Matt Blake while he is on federal active duty orders with the Iowa Army National Guard. The Mayor also proclaimed Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a “Day of Service” in Urbandale and called upon the people of the community to pay tribute to the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through participation in community service projects on January 18, and throughout the year.
The City Council approved the Capital Improvements Program (CIP). The CIP anticipates expenditures of $22,618,800 in the 2021 construction year. The CIP is a ten-year program that identifies the City's maintenance and development needs of public art, buildings, equipment, technology, parks, bridges, sidewalks, storm sewers, streets, street lighting, traffic signals, and water system.
Des Moines and Urbandale are working together to assist in a major revitalization of the Merle Hay campus area into a shopping and entertainment destination (anchored by a new 3,500 seat multi-use arena for the Des Moines Buccaneers, a competition and training center, and a 150-room hotel). The Urbandale City Council approved the signing of an agreement with the City of Des Moines to establish a joint board to support the creation of a reinvestment district for the Merle Hay Mall campus. Fiber Internet and ROW Work
Many services that Urbandale residents depend on (like electricity, internet, and phone service) use cables that stretch across Urbandale in the publicly owned street property called the “right-of-way” (ROW). In most areas, the space between the sidewalk and street is part of this public right-of-way. Cables also hang from utility poles and in public utility easements—depending where you live, easements may run in your front yard, down your side-yard, or even your back-yard.
Soon you’ll start to see more activity in the right-of-way as a new telecommunications service provider—MetroNet— begins building a fiber network across the northwestern Des Moines Metro. And when completed, MetroNet intends to offer fiber internet service to almost all of Urbandale. This is a private business investment and no public funds are being used for this project. Most Urbandale neighborhoods will see some sort of work with this extensive construction project. Construction has begun and will potentially extend into 2022.

Don't Forget to Clear Your Sidewalk
Residents are required by ordinance to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall. Please shovel or blow the snow into your yard, not in the street. If your sidewalk is icy, please apply salt to melt the ice. It is best to remove the snow as early as possible to prevent the buildup of ice or packing of the snow. Property owners that do not remove the snow accumulations from their sidewalk may be subject to a citation and the City may choose to perform the work and assess the costs against the property. The Portable Ice Rink is now open and located just south of the Urbandale Public Library (open from Dawn – Noon for hockey players and from Noon – Dusk for all other skaters). If the Red Flag is up, the rink is unsafe to use and is closed. If the Green Flag is up, the rink is suitable for skating! A special thank you to Iowa Wild and Wells Fargo that donated the rink to the City last year!
