Barrie awards wastewater IPD project to Maple-Bird Joint Venture
The City of Barrie has awarded the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) – for Wastewater Treatment Facility (WwTF) Upgrade Program to the Maple-Bird Joint-Venture (MBJV). The $125 million project is Canada’s largest and most comprehensive wastewater IPD project to date.
The WwTF Upgrade Program will take approximately eight years to complete and includes advanced nutrient removal solution for the existing plant, plans for the expansion of the facility to 96 megalitres per day, digester capacity expansion, peak flow attenuation facility, a new hydro substation and other critical features.

Construction startups vie for top spot at CCA pitch session
Three Canadian firms vied for the top spot at The Innovator’s Pitch: CONtact session held at Canadian Construction Association’s annual conference in Vancouver recently.
Mach85 Inc. president Shaun Kennedy, OnTraccr Technologies Inc. CEO and co-founder Syed Ahmed and Stabiliforce Technologies CEO Love Veronneau all pitched their products to a jury comprised of Smith and Long Limited business initiatives vice-president Dave Graham, Bridgit COO and co-founder Lauren Lake, and JCB Construction Canada Inc. Atlantic director of projects Patrick Lafreniere.

Ontario offering free trades training
The Ontario government has announced that it will spend more than $13 million to provide free training and paid apprenticeships for future electricians. The move is expected to impact more than 2,500 people across the province.
With over $2 billion in infrastructure projects on the horizon, Ontario faces a shortage of electricians and other skilled trades workers. The province expects this program to help deliver critical hospitals, schools and roads on time and on budget.

CIBC SQUARE offices achieve WELL Health-Safety Ratings
Toronto’s new CIBC SQUARE by Ivanhoé Cambridge and Hines has earned WELL Health-Safety Ratings for two of its office spaces. The tower at 81 Bay Street and primary tenant CIBC’s office space have both received the certified health and safety achievement.
Awarded by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) for its operational policies and protocols, community-centric design, and overall innovation, the designation recognizes CIBC SQUARE as a leader in health and safety.

$4.6 billion Hurontario LRT uses unique ‘push box’ system to keep trains rolling
The $4.6 billion Hurontario LRT, which will be renamed the Hazel McCallion Line, a critical 18-kilometre north-south connection between Port Credit and Brampton, is on track with plenty of work on tap for 2022.
Crews will be installing a tunnel underneath the GO rail tracks at Port Credit station and building a new underpass under the QEW at Hurontario Street. New flood walls are also being erected to protect Mary Fix Creek. Last year crews installed about 7.5 kilometres of new watermain, sanitary and stormwater sewers along Hurontario Street.

Construction sector continues to add jobs
Employment in Canada climbed 337,000 in February, a gain of 1.8 per cent that more than offset losses felt following stricter public health measures in January. The unemployment rate dropped a full percentage point, to 5.5 per cent, a rate not seen in almost three years.
Other indicators point to an increasingly tight labour market in February. Total hours worked increased 3.6 per cent while the proportion of the population aged 15 and older who were employed, rose to almost 62 per cent, marking its first return to pre-pandemic levels.

Report: Electric Construction Machines Vital for Cleaner and Greener Construction
Construction machines are estimated to generate around 400 Mt of CO2 emission per year, which is around 1.1% of global CO2 emission. Decarbonization of non-road mobile machines will therefore be an important factor in efforts to limit global climate change. With an increasing number of countries around the world committing to a net-zero carbon future, the construction industry is facing growing scrutiny of its’ greenhouse gas emissions.

OAA reveals Design Excellence Award finalists for 2022
The Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) recently announced 17 finalists for its 2022 Design Excellence Awards which includes libraries, learning institutions, residences and performing arts venues from across Ontario, Canada and the United States. The projects, which are selected by a jury of design experts, are the shortlist for the OAA’s Design Excellence winners, which will be announced next month and celebrated at the OAA Conference: Inspiring Climate Action in Toronto in May.
