"If we save a thousand dollars on our bills, that's eight thousand meals," says Mike Pope, Maintenance and Food Safety Lead for God's Pantry. Last year, The Mountain Association's energy team began working with God's Pantry Food Bank to find ways to help them save on energy at their facilities. God's Pantry serves more than 250,000 individuals in a 50 county service area. It has five warehouse locations and works with more than 450 food pantries and meal programs. After the energy team conducted assessments at facilities located in Lexington, London, and Prestonsburg, and provided Pope and his team with detailed reports identifying opportunities for energy savings. For example, changing out fluorescent lighting to LED lighting for their London facility saves nearly $2,500 per year.
Pope said, "reducing energy costs while other costs are skyrocketing, enables God's Pantry to keep the same amount of meals going into communities." The energy audits are provided free of charge by the Mountain Association to non-profit organizations and small businesses in eastern Kentucky. The Mountain Association energy audit program is funded by a State Energy Program grant awarded by the Energy and Environment Cabinet to support programs to improve quality of life through energy efficiency.
