NEWS — February 21, 2022
This week, my lead story is about "impact production;" using film as a medium for positive social good. Danielle Turkov Wilson is the CEO of "Think Film Impact Production," a company leveraging the power of media for social change. I recently interviewed her and think you'll find her thoughts provocative.

In the news:

TV Tech just published a Special Guide to Archiving [Media]. "Archiving and preserving media is an important responsibility of any media organization," they write. "In this month’s Guide to Archiving, we take a look at not only why archiving is so important, we also examine how advances in cloud and storage technologies are allowing us to increase reliability and accessibility to preserve and maintain our legacy content."

Cinedeck is offering a free webinar on what you'll need to think about when moving your production or post-production from on-premise to remote. Participating are production specialists from Cinedeck, QSR Systems, Vista Studios and Amazon Studios.

Retrospect announced the release of Retrospect Backup 18.5, featuring new anomaly detection, customizable filtering and thresholds, and enhanced ransomware protection to help businesses quickly detect and protect against malicious attacks.

Peachpit Press is offering up to 55% off their latest tech books. (OK, so maybe I have a vested interest in this.) Anyway, the link is below, use the code WINTER. Save 35% on a single book and 55% when you buy two or more.

Whether you need to repair a problem with your Mac or simply maintain your system, the first place to start - after restarting your system - is with Recovery Mode. However, Apple changed how we access this feature with the release of M1 Macs. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to access it using both Intel and M1 systems, then how to run Disk Utility to keep your system running smoothly.

I need your help with this next tutorial. Most of us work with clients, so in this article I list a variety of key questions you need to discuss with the client before starting a job. Take a look and let me know what I left out. My goal is to share this with students to help them get their business started in the right direction.

This week's webinar is "Color Grading in Final Cut Pro." I haven't covered this in over two years - time to see what's new. If you are looking for ways to fix problems or make your images look better, this session is for you. Registration is FREE, with two presentations at 9 AM and 12 PM EST on Wednesday.

I've become a fan of Lumecube lights. These small, portable, battery-powered instruments are great for webcasts and lighting small areas. Recently Lumecube released a bigger AC-powered version called The Edge. Here's my review. (Spoiler: I like it.)

In my interview with Danielle Wilson, I asked her why she was hopeful in these turbulent times. She replied: "Humans have been fighting for a better world since our conception, this has not changed and despite all the horrors we see and have seen in the media the world continues to evolve and become better than the years that preceded it." I was impressed by that. We still have a long way to go, but we have come a great distance already.

Stay safe, stay healthy and, most importantly, stay hopeful. Edit well.
