MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

This week, Jesus appears to be caught between a rock and a hard place. People from the temple have been sent undercover by temple officials, who have schemed a way to trap Jesus into confessing an arrestable crime.

They ask a trick question: “Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” If he says it’s lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, Jesus will be accused of being a Roman sympathizer by the Jewish people. If he says it unlawful to pay taxes to the emperor, Jesus will be accused of treason or sedition by Roman authorities.

Once again, Jesus outsmarts the temple officials. "Show me the coin used for the tax,” he says. And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then Jesus says, "Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

In other words, Jesus is saying everyone must discern for themselves what to do; everyone must balance their obligations to earthly and spiritual rules. This can put us at odds when civil rules conflict with spiritual rules and vice versa.

Fortunately, our baptismal covenant provides guidance. And when discerning our civic and spiritual obligations, the last two parts of covenant are particularly helpful.

  • Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God’s help.

  • Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help.

There are times these two promises may well put us at odds with civic law. The late civil rights leader John Lewis spoke of "good trouble," referring to our obligations to stand up for equality, love, peace, and justice for all people. (Read reflections about John Lewis' "good trouble" here.)

I believe Jesus is continually reminding us of the importance of discerning how and when it's right to embrace the ethos of "good trouble" in order to live into our relationship with God as outlined in our baptismal covenant.

Join us Sunday for more conversation about this gospel reading and our baptismal promises. In times such as these, with war, violence, political unrest, and climate change, we need such a beacon to remind us of our spiritual obligations.

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer
