On Mon., Jan. 31, from 4-6pm, Dr. Solimar Otero (Indiana University, Bloomington) will give a presentation, based on her book Archives of Conjure, entitled "Archives of Conjure: Spirits, Art, and Materiality." This lecture is co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Religion and the Center for Folklore Studies.
Otero's work explores how Afrolatinx spirits guide collaborative spiritual-scholarly activist work through rituals and the creation of material culture. By examining spirit mediumship through a Caribbean cross-cultural poetics, Otero shows how divinities and ancestors serve as active agents in shaping the experiences of gender, sexuality, and race in ethnography, archives, and literature.
