The climate crisis and health: What neurologists should know and can do
Dr. Caren Solomon is a Deputy Editor at the New England Journal of Medicine, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she sees patients at the Fish Center . Dr. Solomon leads efforts at the Journal to  expand attention to the health effects of climate change. She co-chairs the Harvard Medical School Faculty Council’s subcommittee on climate change, is a member of the Brigham Climate Action Council, and is  actively involved in the Harvard divestment campaign. Dr. Solomon graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School and has an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Gregg Furie is Medical Director for Climate and Sustainability at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In this role he works to prepare clinicians to address current and emerging threats from climate change to human health and to reduce the environmental impact of clinical care. He is a member of the Brigham Climate Action Council and the MGB Climate and Sustainability Leadership Council. He is a primary care physician at the Brigham’s South Huntington practice and an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School, did an internal medicine residency at U Penn and fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at Yale.

  1. Identify effects of the continued burning of fossil fuels on health overall and on neurologic disease specifically.
  2. Discuss ways that medical professionals, including neurologists, can reduce climate change-related health risks through education and advocacy.
  3. Understand health care’s contribution to climate change and how MGB is working to implement more sustainable practices.
