Where will Bridge take you? For these Alumni, it's MIT with Celtics star Jaylen Brown!

Justin Gonzalez (class of '23) representing BBCS at MIT

Justin is third from the left.

In 2023, Celtics basketball player and philanthropist Jaylen Brown launched an educational summer program to uplift black & brown soon-to-be high school students. A collaboration between 7uice Foundation, BPS, and the MIT Media Lab, JB introduced his new students to a whole new perspective on learning.

Our favorite part: his organization is also called Bridge.

JoAngel Santos

(former BBCS student)

4 BBCS alums and one former BBCS student engaged with their imagination, creativity, and intelligence in MIT's Media Lab, including:

  • Danaejah Jones (class of '23)
  • David Ugde (class of '23)
  • Curtis Dawn (class of '23)
  • Justin Gonzalez (class of '23)
  • JoAngel Santos (former BBCS student)

In addition to quality time with their new favorite mentor, students learned new perspectives from an astronaut & a rapper, attended the MFA for inspiration, received sick new shoes, and gained understanding of education beyond the classroom.

The Bridge Program's mission is to engage young people from under-represented and marginalized communities in a cutting edge, project-based curriculum of science, technology, and leadership to maximize community impact.

Jalen Brown explains why he invited his students to attend his historic contract signing.

"From creating music using microbial data to building world-solving projects using synthetic biology, our curriculums take advantage of STEM & leadership based courses which aim to both challenge and inspire our young minds."

One of the best parts? JB signed the richest contract in NBA history during the 3-day program, during a press release surrounded by BBCS alumni.

Different this summer: Jaylen Brown's Bridge Program will accept rising 8th - 12th graders for a summer-long program. Want to get involved? Learn more on their website & apply this spring!

Alumni Spotlight: Jasmine Fernandes

Jasmine Fernandes

(Class of '22) is a sophomore at Cristo Rey High School

My college prep classes help me prepare for college, of course, but they also help me get ready for my junior year, where I will start visiting colleges such as the University of Dayton, Boston College, and many more. We also use our prep classes as a study hall.

Who was your favorite teacher at Bridge?

Throughout my Bridge years, I’ve created many, many memories. But my most favorite memories were my 8th grade year because, of course, I got to be in one big class with my friends. Some of my best memories for 8th grade were definitely field day, walking around the school one last time in my cap and gown, and P.E with COACH MIKE. Also, having a good relationship with the second graders with Ms. Jasmine (that are now 4th graders) and how every time I would go to their class, they would be happy to see me, and that made my day.

What was your favorite part about Bridge?

My favorite part of Bridge was most likely my graduating class and definitely the class memories we made.

Favorite music artist?

My favorite music artist has to either be BTS, Karol G or Bryson Tiller.

Favorite food?

My favorite food is definitely pasta.

Favorite movie?

My favorite movies are Princess and the Frog and Cars.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

When I grow up I either want to be a makeup artist, nurse or lawyer.

What advice would you give current students at Bridge?

I would say definitely make amazing memories with your friends but definitely focus on your grades because as you get older, things get harder.
