This BobBlast is all about White - primarily white acrylic paint. Frankly, I use a lot of white paint in my work. I have always said, “If they sell it in the art store, I will paint with it!”
This demo will show how I paint with white all through my color… But first - I want to talk about WHITE and the different whites we encounter when we paint and make art.
Let’s start with the white of the paper… and don’t forget, some papers are white, some are grey and some are black. Watercolorists will mostly choose a white watercolor paper. It’s a clean color that loves to show the brilliance of pure color. Transparent watercolorists use the white of the paper.
Now, let’s talk about white acrylic paint and which ones I use.
•Adding Zinc White to paint will lighten any color and still be transparent
•Adding Titanium White will make any color opaque - see the examples.
I use White in these ways:
•As is - like a white painting
•An overall color tint
•A “White-out” - covering up, painting over, adding contrast or making the entire painting softer and lighter.
I was having fun the other day painting a very wet white wash all over the surface of a day old, dried, acrylic painting. I feel so physical with a White paint and a wide brush. At this point in my work, I’m not too concerned if I am using a warm White or a cool White.
In this demo, I use White to re-energize a painting I had started. Whenever I use color, I include White. Watch me cover over certain parts and augment the contrasting areas. When isolated against dark color, White will draw attention to itself - as the demo shows on the left figure.
But White! There’s More! If you want more info about using White and how it works with color and the creation of neutrals, sign up for a three day, three hours/daily workshop on the subject of Neutrals next month! Here is the info:
