Dear Calverton Family,

As we set to publish this issue of the Cougar Connection, we also look to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. I agree, the three-day weekend comes as a welcome respite in January. I also agree with an adage some schools have ascribed in recent years: MLK Day is a day ON, not a day off. For some, this may mean dedicating time for acts of service in honor of the equity and justice MLK embodied. For others and in schools, in particular, students may reflect on the historical movement MLK sparked through his words which resonate today.

At Calverton, our own middle school students spent a day last week at the National Museum of African American History and Culture and learned about Dr. King's work, impact and legacy. Of course, lessons about equity and inclusion transcend beyond a holiday or a field trip. In our diverse school community and as our mission encourages, we aim to foster a culture of respect and inclusion ensuring an environment where all members feel a sense of belonging. Further, we seek to embody MLK's very definition of a "true education" by feeding each student's mind and character.

On February 1 at 5 pm, I invite you to Moving-Up Night to see what’s in store next year for your child. This event will be in-person and will begin with a brief presentation in the theater. Re-enrollment for the 2023-24 school year will open on February 2 with more information to follow in the coming weeks.
