Wear Purple to Show Support for Survivors of Domestic Violence

On behalf of the Office of Institutional Equity

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it's an opportunity for us to come together as a campus community to raise awareness about this critical issue. To show our solidarity and commitment to ending domestic violence, we encourage everyone on campus to wear purple on 10/19/23, as purple is the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. By wearing purple, we can send a powerful message that we stand with survivors, support their healing journey, and are dedicated to creating a world free from violence.

NEW: Film Screening of "Breaking News"

On behalf of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

CSU in collaboration with the CSU System is hosting The Symposium for Inclusive Excellence on October 23 - 27, 2023. Attend Over 50 FREE Workshops in diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice available via zoom.

CSU Pueblo will be hosting a film screening at the same time as CSU. Join us for a film screening of “Breaking News” and snacks. The film documents the honest discussions at The 19th* around race and gender equity, revealing that change doesn’t come easy and showcasing how one newsroom confronts these challenges both as a workplace and in journalism. But this film is about more than a newsroom. It’s about America in flux and the voices often left out of the American story. There will be discussion immediately following the film.

NEW: Italian Movie Night - My Name is Tanino (2003) by Paolo Virzì

On behalf of the Department of English & World Languages

My Name is Tanino (2003), a film by Paolo Virzì, is in Italian and English with Italian subtitles. This funny and sometimes cheesy rom-com depicts the adventures of a young Sicilian named Tanino (Corrado Fortuna). The film presents his meeting with Sally (Rachel McAdams), a sophisticated, wealthy American girl vacationing in Italy. After their summer fling, Sally assumes that Tanino is a thing of the past. Instead, Tanino follows her back to the United States for a reunion. The movie depicts the protagonist’s vicissitudes during his eventful and eye-opening trip to the USA. PG-13

NEW: Cybersecurity: Two-Factor Authentication

On behalf of Information Security

Two-factor authentication is extremely important in this day and age as hackers are becoming more sophisticated. It is recommended that everyone enable two-factor authentication on everything that they can to make it more difficult for someone to get into your accounts and devices. Here at CSU Pueblo we use Duo for our staff and student accounts, which helps us to secure our school associated accounts.

We should all be doing the same for any and all of our personal accounts and devices that we can. For instance, if you do not lock your phone in some way, and lose it, a bad actor has easy access to your personal accounts and apps, like banking. As mentioned in a previous article, it is important that you have a strong password that is difficult to guess in order to help secure your accounts. Many accounts and more sensitive apps such as banking apps now offer two-factor authentication to help reduce the risk of someone gaining access to your accounts who should not have access to them.

Different apps and sites have different ways to implement the two-factor authentication, but some use biometrics such as a fingerprint and others will use additional apps such as google authenticate to generate a code that must be input in order to verify that you are trying to gain access to one of your accounts. While it may seem like a minor inconvenience to have to scan a fingerprint, tap allow or enter a code, it tremendously increases the security on your personal devices and accounts, and makes it that much more difficult for someone to hack you. Now go enable two-factor authentication on everything!

NEW: In-Person Workshop for Faculty and Staff: How are you today? Exploring Emotional Labor in Academia

On behalf of the Center for Teaching, Learning, & Leadership

Facilitator: Yvonne Montoya, Associate Prof., Communication & Information Design

Emotional labor requires that individuals manage their emotions in an effort to adequately perform their paid work. Being faculty or staff member at an academic institution is one industry that demands emotional labor. While managing emotions is an important aspect of the job, it can lead to increased stress, burnout, absenteeism, and turnover. It is important for institutions and individuals to recognize the impacts of emotional labor and develop ways to deal with this labor in beneficial ways.

NEW: Giving Grace: You Are Better at Experiential Education Than You Think You Are!

On behalf of the CSU Pueblo Center for Teaching, Learning, & Leadership (CTLL)

Most pedagogical (andragogical) models place active learning and “experiential education” at the center of high impact teaching. But many instructors, it seems, struggle to balance the requisite content they need to deliver within the inherent time “hands-on” learning activities often take.

In this session, I compare the different class approaches I’ve used, and the grace I’ve learned to give myself, while balancing time constraints, content coverage, and my desire to create the strongest learning experiences for students.

Together We Will:

Weigh the inherent strengths and challenges of different instructional methods used in our classrooms.

Design a class lesson that evaluates the essential learning for students and leverages the benefits of different active learning strategies.

Use learning from a model lesson to be able to tell a friend why we can accurately reconstruct the music of Ancient Greeks.
