President's Message
Greetings RIMS Washington Chapter Members and Friends!

I have enjoyed the challenge of serving as the Washington RIMS pandemic President for the past two years. On July 1st, my term will come to an end, but I am confident that we will continue to engage with our members and supporters in new and different ways with new leadership.

I have had the pleasure of working with some awesome, dedicated volunteers that have helped the Chapter weather the storm with much success. As recognition of the great work we have accomplished together, I proudly accepted the ECHO (Enhancing Chapter Outcomes) Award given by RIMS Society at the April 2022 conference in San Francisco.

In May we hosted our first hybrid meeting! It was great to see people in person after two years and we were happy to test out a virtual option. I listened to the virtual playback and was happy to hear the audio sounded good (noise canceling speaker does work!). We also sourced our bagged lunches from Pane Pane Gourmet Sandwiches, a local minority-owned business in downtown.

On Thursday June 9th from 4-6pm we are hosting a mini-golf social networking event at Interbay Golf Center. Thanks to the generous support of our Chapter and 2020 Education Forum sponsors, we can offer this event at no cost. Come hang out with peers, enjoy some food and beverage of your choice. I look forward to seeing you there!

Normally we take the summer off from events, but we want to take advantage of the summer weather and do something to benefit our community. Stay tuned for information on an August volunteering event south of Seattle with an opportunity to network at a local brewery afterwards.

If you’re not on our mailing list, you can sign up on our Chapter Website or connect with us on LinkedIn. We appreciate any questions, feedback, or suggestions that you may have. Please contact me here or any of our board members.

I want to thank our 2022 Chapter Sponsors: AIGAONAXA XL, FM Global, Marsh, Sedgwick, and Zurich. Your continued support of our Chapter makes everything we do possible.

On a final note, I appreciate the support of our members, sponsors, and friends. I hope you all enjoy the summer and that it comes soon!

2022 ECHO Award
The RIMS Washington Chapter was awarded a 2022 ECHO (Enhancing Chapter Outcomes) Award by RIMS Society. The Award is given to groups that align their programming with RIMS strategic priorities to innovate, develop, engage and advocate for the global risk management community.

Get Involved and Volunteer with RIMS!
Volunteering is essential to service the goals of our chapter and support our members. Best of all, our volunteers do it because they believe in the cause and want to help. Whether you're looking for something short-term, or a longer-term involvement, we have the right opportunity for you. Your contribution will support fellowship, education, and community service by:

  • Sharing your knowledge and expertise
  • Utilizing your connections to promote RIMS
  • Engaging with other members to create a stronger risk management community
  • Supporting the next generation of risk managers
  • Expanding the profile and reach of RIMS to include all members of our community

If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities and the various positions or committees, please contact us!

Programs
Thank you to our speakers and all who joined us online and in-person for our May hybrid lunch program, 2022 Property Challenges with Valuations. It was great to see some familiar smiling faces in-person again!
Don’t FORE-get to register for the Chapter’s June program where members will be able to network over food, drinks and 18 holes of mini-golf at Interbay Golf Center. We hope you can par-TEE with us, rain or shine.

This is a complimentary event as a thank you to our members, chapter sponsors, and 2020 Education Forum Sponsors.
August 2022
Stay tuned for a summer opportunity to gather and give back!

Marsh – What is ESG and why is it crucial?

Embedding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) is increasingly a source of competitive advantage to the organizations that do it right. Providing our clients with a clear framework from which to better understand their ESG performance, make more informed investment decisions, and potentially negotiate better insurance outcomes is a key priority.

Clients can use the results to identify their most critical sustainability- and climate-related risks and opportunities, and work with Marsh’s advisors to further develop their ESG strategies. They also can choose to share the results with insurers – which are becoming increasingly more inquisitive and concerned about ESG risks – to potentially achieve better underwriting outcomes.

The U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently warned urgent action is needed to achieve the 1.5oC goals of the Paris Agreement. The RIMS WA Chapter Observes Juneteenth
Juneteenth was established as a Washington State and Federal holiday in 2021. Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas, on June 19, 1865, two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

This Juneteenth, Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry and the Black Heritage Society of WA State will be co-presenting The Unspoken Truths installation at MOHAI. More information about visiting the award-winning exhibit can be found here.

How can you honor Juneteenth? Volunteer at local Juneteenth events or rallies, sign-up for a diversity & inclusion workshop, and ensure diversity & inclusion is a year-round effort in your workplace.
