An Artist's Journey: Cambridge's Theresa Knight Mcfadden

Theresa Knight McFadden’s life as an artist is a great guide for making art while making a living, something many artists aspire to. She is also an example of how getting to that doesn’t have to take a straight path.

Knight McFadden notes that from the time she was tiny, she was pulled to make things. The Catholic schools she attended growing up did not offer much in the way of arts training and by high school “I had lost my confidence in my ability to make art,” so she turned to her second favorite subject, English. When she found no art being offered at George Mason University in Virginia, she decided to focus on writing.

For ten years, freelance writing, and eventually writing for National Geographic World (the children’s magazine of National Geographic) let her follow her creativity after marriage during college and one child by the time she graduated. Yet she still yearned to make art.

To that end, she enrolled in art classes at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), the local community college and realized, “This is what I really want.” After she had earned her associate in arts degree, her teacher, Michael Platt, asked her when she was going to graduate school in art. Until that point, Knight McFadden had assumed that one needed an undergraduate degree in art to continue to an arts degree at the graduate level, but Platt told her to assemble a portfolio and that he would write a letter of support for her, and that was how she found herself accepted to the University of Maryland’s MFA program.

The Arc and Helping Families Manage Care Expenses

6567ec856041f image

While increasingly gaining deserved notability for the organization’s commitment and construction of affordable Housing on the Eastern Shore, Port Street Commons being a good example, in recent years, it has sometimes been overlooked by the general population about its core mission.

For more than forty years, The Arc has devoted all of its resources to helping families take care of children with intellectual and physical disabilities. And one way that is done is through The Arc Family Fund.

Established in 2017, the Family Fund has become a beacon of hope for families struggling with the financial burden of therapies, equipment, and educational opportunities for children with disabilities. The innovative fund was created to address the needs often not covered by insurance and beyond the financial reach of many. With a focus on youth under 21, the Family Fund has already disbursed over $90,000 to local needy families.

Hurlock extends warm holiday welcome

65762134cab0b image

HURLOCK — For its first daytime Christmas parade in several years, the town of Hurlock got to celebrate the season under bright sunny skies, enjoying almost balmy temperatures.

Despite the decidedly un-December-like weather, on the traditionally frosty month’s second Saturday, Dec. 9, young and old alike turned out to line Main Street, eagerly awaiting the scheduled 12 o’clock noon start to the annual event, which this year featured the theme, “May the joy of the season be felt worldwide.”

As the procession’s dignitaries, marching bands, fire trucks, vintage vehicles, and festive floats found their places in line, parade emcee DJ Buddy Bloom III, situated across from Mom and Pop’s Family Restaurant, kept spirits bright with tunes, updating the crowd as ‘kickoff’ time drew close.

Blue Christmas Service

The Christmas season is hard for those whose hearts are hurting.

The designation acknowledges the "Blue" feelings many people experience during the Advent and Christmas seasons.

For those who have lost a loved one, this is a time of acute loneliness. For those who have lost a relationship or a job, experienced failing health or financial setbacks, this is a time of pain, confusion and anxiety. We can still worship with honesty in the confidence that God shares our pain, understands our loss and seeks to be present in comforting and hopeful ways.

Blue Christmas is a gentle, contemplative service that offers comfort and hope for those carrying pain or loss during this season of celebration.
