UPCOMING ISSUE

NEXT MONTH MARKS JUST ONE MONTH TO THE 2016 WORLD SERVICE CONVENTION IN BOSTON. Look for more important insider tips to navigating the convention, including: how to remain balanced during the convention; how schedule your day with so many great options; and how to reenter "the real world" after the weekend.
Dear Fellow OA Member:

Last week I "lost, misplaced, couldn't find" the charger to my laptop. "Computer issues" I called it. It sure was an issue, because I wasn't able to finish this newsletter in time to send it out by the first of the month - my goal each month. I had a good idea where I had been with the laptop and charger, and somewhere along my travels the two items separated. I looked for the charger in places I thought it might be. Nothing. No luck.

So, I prayed. "Little Jesus lost and found, help me while I look around." I let it go. Just in case, I came up with a back up plan to finish the newsletter on my work computer (sort of hoping I wouldn't have to use Plan B).

This morning, I yet again revisited one of the places I looked previously - and voila! -- the charger was right on top of a few items in the truck of my car - I mean right on top. Hadn't I looked there before? Yes. Did I see it? No. This time something was different. That something is likely to have been me.

How many times has this happened in program - I couldn't find something, see something, hear something - and then, a light goes on, an answer comes into focus, I hear a set of words as if for the first time. And yet, it was there all along. I was the one who needed to change, or make a change with God's help (Step 7).

Speaking of here all along, we are blessed in this area to have a number of members who have been abstinent for more than 20 years and still active in program. You know who they are - they were here when you got here or when you returned, and are still here today. They are the cornerstones of many meetings, continue to do service, and reach out to newcomers and returning members alike. Their experience and wisdom continues to set an example of "how it works."

Beginning this month, two such"longtimers," Pat D. and Jeanne D., will help kick off a new feature dedicated to the wisdom of longtimers. Not only do Pat and Jeanne have a combined abstinence of nearly 70 years, they continue to sponsor, do service, work the steps, and practice the principles of the program.

The format of "Experience Hope Strength: Wisdom from Longtimers" will range from tidbits of wisdom to Q&As. The feature will appear alternately with Newcomer Corner and Recovery from Relapse. A great big thank you to Pat and Jeanne for sharing themselves with all of us, as they have done all along.

My hand in yours,
Leslie A.

Summer workshop welcomes help

Ocean & Bay Intergroup is proud to welcome our Region 6 Trustee to lead a half-day workshop, "Empower Your Program" on Sunday, July 31st at Kent Hospital, 1 to 4:30 p.m. (see poster for details). To make the event a success, your help will be warmly welcomed. Join fellow OAers prior to the Intergroup meeting Tues., July 5th at 6:30 p.m. (see above); or let your Intergroup rep know you are interested in helping the day of the event.

Considering a move

Ocean & Bay Intergroup has been looking for a meeting space that is centrally located, handicap accessible, can provide safe storage for literature, and is available on the first Tuesday of the month. A few sites are under consideration, including Warwick, Johnston, and Lincoln. More info to follow.

Special notice to Groups

Groups are asked to check their meeting listing on the oa.org website. These listings are different than the ones we manage on our Intergroup meeting list -- they are the official OA.ORG website listings accessible to members and newcomers worldwide. In addition to checking the place and time of the meeting, contact information should be confirmed or updated.

Treasure Chest
Little gems and pearls of wisdom from meetings and literature.

There are two times when you go to OA meetings; when you want to and when you do not want to!

You can't think yourself into right action; but you can act yourself into right thinking.

Step, Tradition & Concept of the Month

STEP 7 - Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

TRADITION 7 - Every OA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

CONCEPT 7 - The Board of Trustees has legal rights and responsibilities accorded to them by OA Bylaws, Subpart A; the right and responsibilities of the World Service Business Conference are accorded to it by Tradition and by OA Bylaws, Subpart B.

*RESPONSIBILITY is the Spiritual Principle of the 7th Tradition.
Our friends in New York have asked us to pass the word about their upcoming retreat.

Wisdom from OA Longtimers

Pat D. (Abstinence date 4/3/78)
To what do you attribute your longevity? The Grace of God and the 12 Steps of OA -- and I do not say this lightly. I have been led to the most wonderful sponsors overs the years and continue to be blessed with OA meetings and the gift of sponsees who enlighten my body, mind, and Spirit.
What advice would you give to others to get so many years? Stay close to the Program -- attend meetings, have a sponsor and be a sponsor, become "a part of" by giving service, volunteer support at least one of your meetings in a service position. This is what got me out of the disease of isolation and into recovery.

Jeanne D. (Abstinence date 8/15/86)
To what do you attribute your longterm abstinence? Remembering that: I am an addict and am always one bite away, I have a disease, and that I have a daily reprieve that is based on the quality of my spiritual recovery, one day at a time.
What do you still do today that you did in the beginning? Go to meetings, do service, have and use a sponsor.
