Der Maibaum (the May Pole)
~ Weather-wise the month of May is probably the nicest month of the Year here in Germany. By this time spring has really sprung (at last) and "a young man's (and womanโs) fancy turns to love." In older days the young unmarried men of the village would join in a loose union called "Burschenschaft" ("Bursche" means "fellow" and "schaft" is a German suffix similar to our -ship: Freundschaft = friendship; Burschenschaft = fellowship). These young fellows would organize and sponsor parties, dances and celebrations, so that the young unmarried maidens of the village would also "get in the mood." If then a wedding took place, the friends would get together and decorate a tree with colorful streamers and ribbons and place it in front of the bride's house. This is the origin of the Maibaum (Baum = tree; cf our โbeamโ) and in smaller German villages you'll see them erected in front of the bride's house, indicating that a wedding has taken place.
~ Nowadays, the Maibaum has lost its original meaning of celebrating a wedding and is more officially erected at the city hall or some other prominent spot in town. Often colorful signs or shingles decorate the "tree/beam" and indicate the town's various trades. The Maibaum stays up during the entire month of May.

Living in Germany for over 46 years , I have had the honor to work with many colleagues that have assisted me in widening my horizons in the culinary world. I used to ONLY drink white sweet wine, and during an event planning I was going to host at Schloss Monrepos Wine cellars, Ramona Rosendorf shared some of her wine knowledge, techniques and experiences. She was instrumental in having us think outside the box, as we explored Wine and Champagne jellies or wine infused chocolates to new levels of wine lovers. Ramona, loved her job at the Winery of Weingut Herzog von Wรผrttemberg, as she assisted me in scheduling many Dinners and wine tastings at the Castle at Monrepos (Outside of Stuttgart, Germany) Even though Ramona has taken a new position, I am so looking forward to another wine visit in Ludwigsburg, and see what Ramona is up to. #Lovemycollegues

The next memorable German feast day coincides with an American one: Mother's Day. It is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May and was introduced in the United States in 1908 and in Germany in 1941.
Since Motherโs Day falls into the German Spargel (asparagus) season, it has become a somewhat unofficial custom for the family to invite the mother out to a Spargel splurge.
