CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT COUNCILS

The Harbinger

November 2023

Student Advisory Board on Education

Thank you to all the amazing delegates and staff!!!

This year we had a full delegation of 75 students and unique topic proposals.

SABE PROPOSAL TOPICS

College and Career Readiness: Recognizing that many students feel unprepared for higher education and career endeavors, the SBE should urge that school districts hold semesterly seminars to inform students about extracurricular activities, Career Technical Education (CTE), and college and career opportunities.

Current and Global Affairs: Recognizing the lack of education about current events in the global world, the SBE should amend the current history framework to include aspects of global affairs throughout the History-Social Science curriculum.

Restorative Justice:

Recognizing the problem of exclusionary punishment, the SBE should recommend that the California Department of Education implement the guidelines that establish peer courts, publish disciplinary actions, and ensure continuous reevaluation of the restorative justice framework.

Socioeconomic Equity:

Recognizing the lack of accessibility and understanding of important fiscal documents, the SBE should provide online simplified summaries of the LCAP, anonymous online feedback submissions, and meeting agendas from LCAP Committee meetings.

Student Wellbeing and Mental Health:

Recognizing the lack of proportionate investment for students’ emotional and mental state, the State Board of Education (SBE) should implement a metric for “social and emotional wellness” under the “School Climate” priority of the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

Financial Literacy: Recognizing the lack of relevant financial instruction, the SBE should revise the existing high school Economics curriculum framework to include financial literacy education and utilize recent legislative grants, in areas such as Fresno County, to integrate practical financial education into existing instruction.

At SABLE, students have the unique opportunity to follow up on proposals that were created during the Student Advisory Board on Education conference in October. Though non-SABE delegates are also invited to attend SABLE, SABE delegates are highly encouraged to come to SABLE and present their refined proposals to the Assembly Committees on Education.
