Lassen National Forest Announces

Temporary Closure on Lake Almanor Trail

The Lassen National Forest has begun the next phase of work on the Boardwalk Service Contract timber removal project around the community of Lake Almanor West on the west shore of Lake Almanor.

This phase, ending approximately October 31st, will include a temporary trail closure for three miles of the Lake Almanor Recreation Trail in the vicinity.

This work will impact public access to the bicycle trail during hours of machine operations.

Noise will exist during operating hours from 5:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. and will vary as weather conditions become hotter and drier.

Visitors are advised to proceed with caution as they travel the road toward the bicycle trail. There will be extra vehicle traffic and heavy equipment for cutting, processing, and decking of cut timber in the area. Visitors should not access the Lake Almanor Recreation Trail from this trailhead but can access it at USFS Dyer View or PG&E Rocky Point.

Temporary Trail Closure – The Almanor Ranger District will closing portions of the Almanor Recreation Trail to reduce risks to the users of the trail. Maintenance and clean-up work will be occurring during the winter months of 2023 and through mid-spring of 2024 as a result of the Dixie Fire. Users are advised to stay off the northern portion of the trail above Almanor Drive West.

Burned timber and deep root holes in this area create hazard trees and safety concerns for the public.

The removal of these fire killed trees help protect visitors and reduce future fuel loadings.

“This project is the first step to restoring recreation opportunities on the Almanor Ranger District,” says Russell Nickerson, District Ranger of the Almanor Ranger District. “As we continue our reforestation efforts, future operations will include planting trees and repairing facilities in the area.”

For additional questions on this ongoing project, you can reach the Almanor Ranger District office at 530-258-2141.

Purity Market on South Lassen Street in the late 1940’s ~ From an Eastman Studios Postcard

Sympathy Strike Closes Every Grocery Store

September 25, 1942

A sympathy walkout resulting from a wage dispute between members of the AFL Retail Clerks Union 750 and Purity and Safeway stores today closed every grocery store and meat market in Susanville.

The Purity store closed Thursday, and the Safeway store today. Spokesmen for employers said both stores would remain closed indefinitely.

The J.C. Penney store in Susanville has been closed for three weeks over a wage dispute, despite attempts by a federal wage conflict conciliator to affect a settlement.

Indications were that the sympathy walkout would be extended to other businesses shortly.

All affected stores were members of the Susanville Employers Council.
