Current Case Count/10,000 people: 35.5 (was 21.8)
|
|
|
The cases/10,000 people in Hennepin County have spiked from 26.8 to 35.5 which means:
-
We are in Phase 2 of our COVID Re-entry Plan (See plan here)
- In-person, indoor worship on April 18 is pushed out to May 16
- All in-person Confirmation programming will happen outdoors starting April 14 – not in the building
- All building use for internal and external groups is on hold for now until the numbers are consistently lower.
Note: Phase 5 is the best case scenario, with Phase 1 being very restrictive in daily operations at TLC.

Last week, the TAC and KinderPlus kids had visitors from the Reptile and Amphibian Discovery Zoo (RAD Zoo). One visitor was human, the others were, well, see the photos. The ELC children learned about many reptiles and amphibians. At the end of the presentation, they even had an opportunity to touch an alligator!
Looking for educational, hands-on experience and fun care for your child? TLC Early Learning Center (ELC) is now enrolling for our Aardvark and Ducktail classrooms (ages 3 and 4). First of all, wasn't our Easter parking lot service a good idea? I was happy to greet Pastor Eva Jensen for the first time, too! She complimented me on my mask, and we said we'd be able to hug sometime soon... Let's hope for that to be something to look forward to, if we stay vigilant and get our vaccinations completed. When I told Pastor Eva I am "Bloomington Bird Lady" she knew why my mask has birds on it. We heard "Got your vaccinations yet?" so many times. (we are wondering if we'll need booster shots after a while.)
It's so nice to connect with people again, and let's hope everyone stays vigilant and we can return to what's going to be "The Good Old Days" once more. Easter always comes close to Purim [Purim is a Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an Achaemenid Persian Empire official who was planning to kill all the Jews, as recounted in the Book of Esther] and Passover, so when we served on the board of Musical Offering, a chamber group, we learned more about our Jewish friends. We would meet at a U of MN professor's home in Falcon Heights. Providing the goodies for concerts at Sundin Hall at Hamline University was part of being on the board, so at this time of year, the food had to be kosher. (Look it up, but kosher means to not even put meat and milk dishes together, and lots of Jews just turn vegetarian to make life easier.)
I've been telling about my friend, Louise Dillery off and on here, and you might wonder if she knows about Passover, kosher food, etc. She even became Catholic when she got married. So, I ended up explaining to Louise what Passover meant, what Kosher is, etc. I don't believe she was ever a practicing Jew, just to stay safe in those horrible times for Jews during Hitler's occupation of France. I hope I told the Passover story well... Not often do we get these opportunities. There are other Jewish practices that can use explaining too. When our friend from the Musical Offering board lost her mom, we went to the graveside service at a tiny Jewish cemetery. At the close of the ceremony, shovels of dirt are tossed in one at a time to cover the casket. Birdman was asked to be a pall bearer, so on went the yarmulka! Hearing the dirt hit the casket is not easy for the first one to pick up the shovel. Louise remembers when her mom died of TB, she had to be the first one to drop a shovelful of dirt on her mom's casket.... Not an easy thing for a young teenager. At Pearl Buda's graveside service, we got some excellent help learning all about Jewish funeral practices. Mindy Ratner, of public radio was there, and quite willing to tell us.
I have one more coincidence to tell. We had been to Oakdale about a year ago now, visiting Louise. Coming home to Bloomington, we decided to drive through Minneapolis and see if a favorite restaurant had been closed. We passed that now familiar block where Cup Foods is located, not realizing that it would become a memorial to someone killed by a policeman. It must have happened shortly after we drove by. Are these true coincidenses or are they meant to be? We'll never know.
-Bloomington Bird Lady

God's Unending
Love
for Each of Us
A continuing series by Pastor Al Dungan
|
|
|
How much does God love us? Thiiiiiissss much!
It never ceases to amaze me when I think about how much God truly, truly loves us.
I am completing a class on the Apocalypse of John, better known to us as Revelation. The commentator who has written the text book for this class reminded me that God, over and over and over again, gives each of us the opportunity to repent (which means to make a 180 degree turn) from our sins and turn to the God who made and loves us with an unending love. The commentator even goes so far as to say that in Revelation, God even gives Satan the opportunity, many times, to repent and return to God. Now that, my friends, is graceful love!! It’s only when Satan totally and finally refuses to repent that God casts him into the lake of burning sulfur for all eternity.
We have just celebrated the Festival of Easter which is the high point in the lives of all Christians. It shows, once again, that we have a God who loves us all so much that God allowed the forces of evil to do their worst in the act of crucifixion of Jesus and allowed him to die on the cross for us. What amazing love!
We confess, “On the third day he rose again”. His rising from death shows us that even death on the cross can’t stop God’s love.
Now let me ask you, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, that very Lutheran of all questions: What does this mean for us? Just what does Christ’s resurrection from the dead mean for us/for you?
The easy answer, of course, is that we need not fear death because it is not the end for us. The easy answer, of course, is so that we can live for eternity with God and Christ in heaven.
But, just as the crucifixion was a most painful death, just so must be our willingness to experience loss, pain and sacrifice just as the Lord Jesus did. We can’t just sit with our hands calmly folded in our laps waiting for the end of our lives to come.
It means that we must, must, be out in the world, insofar as we are able to discover ways to serve our Lord. It means discovering ways to feed the hungry, give safe water to drink to the thirsty, provide clothes to those who need them, welcome the alien and the stranger, visit those who are sick and in prison.
In short, it means giving of ourselves unselfishly in any way we possibly can.
We have celebrated the Festival of Easter in which God show God’s unending love for each of us. How can we extend that love beyond our own lives to bless the lives of others?
That is God’s call to each of us.
How will we/you answer this call?

TLC Early Learning Center (TLC-ELC) has been a ministry of Transfiguration Lutheran Church since 1985. Their goal 36 years ago was to minister to a need in the community. They are still going strong today. TLC-ELC is the only Christian based non-profit NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) 4-Star child care center in Bloomington.
This past year has been a difficult year for everyone, and that includes TLC-ELC. Due to COVID-19, attendance has dropped about 23%. But, due to the PPP Loan, the ELC has been able to keep their full staff working, and they’ve done a fantastic job in providing a consistent schedule for the children. During the ever-changing months when schools were doing distance learning, ELC staff provided the support and follow through that was needed for the children to be successful in their school work. During this emotionally draining time, staff has been working very hard maintaining CDC guidelines while providing quality care for each child and meeting their individual needs.
- Thank you to all Transfiguration members who continue to support the ELC through prayers and financial support. There are also some very specific ways to support the ELC:
- Tell your friends, families and neighbors about TLC-ELC; we especially need children who are 3 – 5 years old to fill our classrooms.
- Like our FaceBook page (@TLCELCBloomingtonMN); make comments and pass it on to others.
-
Visit our newly designed and remodeled website: tlcelc.com
- Pray for us, that we continue to be a ministry of Transfiguration to our community.
Looking forward, we have important goals, such as updating the playground, filling vacancies in our classrooms, and being financially stable.

We are just a month away from the end of the confirmation program year and the intention was to move into live, in-person meetings. For the most part that WILL be the case, but with a little adjustment.
THIS WEEK ONLY: we will continue our virtual confirmation. With so many families traveling out of state and abroad, AND with the numbers in Hennepin County and the Bloomington School District spiking a bit, we are going to be on the cautious side with our re-entry since the cases 35.5/10,000 people have pushed us back into hybrid mode.
Here is the schedule for the rest of the year.
- April 14 – Confirmation at TLC in the parking lot (as weather allows)
- April 21 – Confirmation at TLC in the parking lot (as weather allows)
- April 28 – Confirmation at TLC in the parking lot (as weather allows)
- May 5 – Last night of Confirmation Celebration (games, snacks, etc., in the parking lot)
NOTE: Each week outdoors, please bring a lawn chair to sit in with your group!
