Crisis Center for South Suburbia

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The Crisis Center for South Suburbia is promoting a public awareness campaign for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October to educate community members about the prevalence of abuse, encourage people to take action to promote social change, and alert victims and survivors to the options and resources that are available to them. Business leaders are encouraged to share and support this effort by putting up posters for "Painting the Town Purple" and sharing information through their places of business and social media. Chef Maddox Oktoberfest

Held annually since 1810 in Munich, Oktoberfest is a 16-18 day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October. Chef Susan Maddox will celebrate this occasion by demonstrating delicious German cuisine along with culinary methods and techniques. This is an evening not to be missed.

Mental Health Awareness

World Mental Health Day is Tuesday, October 10, 2023, an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. Mental illness affects 1 in 5 individuals during their lifetime. In this presentation you will learn about the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression, two of the most common types of mental health disorders, how and when to seek treatment and assistance for yourself or for a loved one, and resources available through National Alliance on Mental Illness Will-Grundy.

UFO/UAP: Are You a Believer?

Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) have long been a subject of fascination and speculation, both in the U.S. and around the world. Join lecturer Jerome Julian for a captivating, grounded history of UFOs, the varied and diverse UFO movement, and the U.S. government’s interest in the controversy (ranging from 'genuine alarm' to 'casual dismissal'), including response to the Roswell incident of 1947, 1969’s Project Blue Book investigation, and today's current studies conducted by NASA of UAPs.

Scarecrow Building Contest

Scarecrow's Due: October 10th | Voting: October 12th-31st

Calling all families, scout groups, homeowners associations and business members…to come join the fun by participating in the annual Scarecrow Building Contest! Scarecrows will be displayed outside the Founders Community Center, so let your creative skills shine and construct eye catching entries. The cross sticks will be provided by the Park District and will be available for pick-up starting August 21. All entries are due by October 10. Voting will run October 12-31. Voting will take place at the Founders Community Center office & on the Park District’s Facebook page. 

Thriller At Main Park

Friday, October 13th | Session I: 4:30 - 6 pm & Session II: 6:30 - 8 pm | Main Park, 400 W. Nebraska St.

Join us for a family friendly Halloween event at Main Park. There will be a DJ dance party, balloon artist, inflatables, spooky games, hayride, thriller dance contest, kid crafts, small pumpkin patch, and more. The deadline for pre-registration will be October 6 or until filled. Children registered by October 6 will receive a goody bag. Registrations taken after the deadline (if space is available) will be charged $15. Please call the office for availability. Goody bags are not guaranteed after October 6. In the event of inclement weather, a decision will be made 48 hours prior to the event. If event moves indoors, some attractions will be modified or removed. Registration Deadline: October 6 or until filled

Trunk or Treat

Saturday, October 28th | 10 am - 12 pm

The Frankfort Police Department host an annual E.F. Bucko Costume Parade and Safety Trunk or Treat the Saturday before Halloween (unless Saturday the 31st, then it held on that day). The event is from 10 a.m - 12 p.m. and is held in the Breidert Green Municipal lot in downtown Frankfort (Oak at Kansas Street). This FREE family fun event allows children to show off their Halloween costumes while safely trick or treating trunk to trunk in the parking lot. Various business civics, and organizations from the community decorate their trunks and are ready to hand out treats. The E.F.
