Dear Parents,
As we all continue to follow the guidance and recommendations from the CDC and VDOE to reduce viral transmission and keep our children and school personnel healthy and safe at school, please take a moment to review our Exposure Policy:
In the event a student or staff member has a known exposure to COVID-19, they must remain out of school and quarantine for 14 days following the exposure and may return on day 15, if they do not develop any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. In the event signs or symptoms develop during the 14 days, the exposed child or staff member must remain in isolation for at least 10 additional days from the day of the first symptom and until they have had no fever for 24 hours without medication and have no new symptoms.
SIA will follow guidance from the VDH regarding situations of exposure to COVID-19. Exposure will be defined by: “Close to someone with COVID-19” : being within 6 feet of someone with COVID-19 for at least 15 minutes or having exposure to the person’s respiratory secretions (for example, coughed or sneezed on; shared a drinking glass or utensils; kissing) while they were contagious.
A person with COVID-19 is considered to be contagious starting from 2 days before they became sick, or 2 days before they tested positive if they never had symptoms. Contacts of COVID-19 must quarantine, which means stay at home to limit community exposure to illness and to see if symptoms develop. For details see FAQ Section Isolation / Quarantine / Movement Restrictions / Public Health Monitoring.
There is NO TESTING OUT OF QUARANTINE FOR KNOWN EXPOSURE TO COVID-19.

Third Grade Students Learn about Businesses
|
|
SIA third grade students were learning the IB theme, How the World Works and began discussing lines of inquiry such as the "coolest stores" at malls, online commerce and entrepreneurs with small businesses and how to market their company. The project concluded with the students creating their own "Virtual Mini-Mall" and learned many important business concepts along the way.
Students asked the following questions:
How are stores online different than in person?
How is money handled differently?
What do stores do with unsold goods? (ex: liquidation sales and auctions).
How do stores lead people in? Specials? Billboards? Social Media ads?
Students crafted an attractive physical store "front" using a cardboard flat, colored paper, pictures and art, and students try to drive business to their stores.
Students created online store using Google Slides, with front page being store front, and following pages feature items for sale with sale prices, deals, specials, discounts, etc. To keep it simple, everything was priced by the $100's, with max price $1,000.
Using pretend credit cards with $3,500 balance, students shopped each other's stores online (via Google slides/sharing) and purchased and sold items, recorded all transactions in order to figure out balances on credit cards.
Lastly, the students had a whole-class auction to try to sell off any products that didn't sell! This is how the world works now, and these kids understand supply & demand!

Celebrating Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan (The New Month)
By Rashi Brashevitzky, PY Judaic Studies Director
|
|
Monday was Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, the first day in the Jewish month, Cheshvan. Primary Years students gathered via Google Meet to celebrate. Mrs. B. introduced the new month to the students and spoke about rain being a blessing. Students then used their hands to create rain sounds in their classrooms and used Playdoh to create things which we need rain for. Teachers shared photos of their students’ Playdoh creations, and all of the students were able to watch the photo feed which was displayed on the screen. A wonderful time was had by all!

Parent Volunteer Organization
|
|
Dear SIA Parents,
We would love for you to get involved! Just like our students, we know that each of you have so much to contribute to our school in different ways. There are many ways to get involved in our Parent Volunteer Organization. Even if you don't have a lot of time to contribute, it's a great way to connect with other parents at SIA!
Teacher Appreciation:
Our teachers are working extra hard this year, and we would love to find ways to show our appreciation. This committee will also coordinate Teacher Appreciation Week in May.
SIA Parent Ambassadors:
Parent Ambassadors work the Admissions team to help to promote SIA, Speak to prospective families and attend Open House events.
Fundraising:
Work with our Development Team to coordinate fundraising initiatives for SO.
Community Building Events:
We miss seeing our SIA families at school! Events look a little different this year, and we would love your help with ideas and coordination for "Covid" appropriate events which will for the most part be virtual.
