Dear Fellow OA Member:

Co...Co...Co...Co...Courage

It's April and that means a lot of talk about the Fourth Step. How many times have we heard members say they are afraid of doing their Fourth Step, or perhaps we ourselves have said it. Well, it just so happens that the spiritual principle of Step 4 is "courage." That makes a lot of sense since so much of a Fourth Step inventory is based on its opposite -- fear -- and not just of doing step work. Yup, that "F" word. Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Recover. We each get to chose -- do I live in fear or live with courage?

Courage comes from the Latin word cor, meaning heart. The original definition of courage was to tell a story of who you are with your whole heart. Wow. Isn't that just what Step 4 allows us to do? We reveal the most vulnerable, authentic, and even darkest story of ourselves from deep within, first to ourselves and then to God and another human being. That certainly takes courage.

But fear doesn't just go away after the Fourth Step. For me, when it crops up from time to time, the call for courage is something that comes to me through others. The ability to act in spite of my fear is energized not from within, but by encouragement, love, and support from a sponsor, fellow OA members, and always, God.

My hand in yours,
Leslie A., Co-editor

BACK ON TRACK

Suggestions for Breaking Free from Relapse
  • "UP" your meetings. Aim for 90 meetings in 90 days (it's easier than you think). If you can't get to more face-to-face meetings, add phone meetings. Some are recorded and can be played back anytime.
  • GET CLEAR about your food plan. Try working with a qualified professional and/or your sponsor to create a food plan that is specifically for you and YOUR ABSTINENCE. And, don't compare it to others! Your plan is your plan.
  • Sponsorless? You know -- get one. Don't call your sponsor? RECOMMIT to call more often starting TODAY. Need a change? Don't wait for a new him or her to fall into your lap, though miracles do happen. There is someone who would love to help you.
  • Do it ONE DAY AT A TIME, one hour at a time, or just one moment at at time.
  • When all else fails (or even when it works), PRAY.  The solution is always spiritual.
  • KEEP COMING BACK. "Don't leave before the miracle happens!"
