New Spaces, New Beginnings
|
|
Dr. Jennifer Buchanan did the honors of completing the very first procedure in the new clinic - a spay surgery on one of six 10-week-old Chihuahua puppies transferred to KHS from California.
Not only did this surgery signify a new beginning for KHS but one for puppies Dingo, Coyote, Wren, Deer, Blue Jay, Little Bear, and mom Fennec Fox as well. These pups traveled nearly 870 miles from Merced County to find loving homes in Washington State. Thanks to the partnership of New Beginnings For Merced County Animals via Dog is my Copilot, this litter of pups and mom were all adopted from Kitsap Humane Society into loving homes.
This happy ending is just one of many the new clinic aims to provide our community. It's designed to provide low-cost veterinary care and keep people with their pets in the face of difficult financial circumstances. This brand-new space features enhanced treatment and surgery areas for critical care patients, quieter recovery rooms for shelter pets to heal after surgery, on-demand access to diagnostic equipment, and a specialized dental suite to provide greater individualized care.
Today, our team of veterinary professionals use the clinic to treat shelter pets in need of medical care, as well as those owned by members of the public on an extremely limited, emergency referral basis from our community veterinary partners. The clinic will open to members of the public who qualify in early 2024.

License Your Pet- It's the Law!
|
|
Did you know that more than 75 percent of lost pets never make it back home? That’s because they are missing a collar, tag, and license!
One easy way to avoid losing your pet is to get them licensed! Pets who are licensed and wearing their tags can easily be returned home, whether they are found running loose by a Good Samaritan or an animal control officer, or brought to a veterinarian’s office.
A pet license not only helps your pet get home safely in the event that they go missing, they are also required by law in unincorporated Kitsap County and all municipalities. KHS is proud to serve as the licensing agent for all of Kitsap County, fulfilling our mission of keeping pets and people together and reducing the number of stray animals finding themselves in our shelter.
Please see our website for more information on specific jurisdiction requirements and fees. If you love your pets and don't want to lose them, license them!

Every day that a deserving animal finds a loving home is a win in our book. While our staff do all they can to provide the very best care while they're here, the pets in our care deserve homes and families of their own. Nothing makes us happier than seeing the pets we've grown to love and care for find happy endings.
Adoptions during the month of August were no different. Last month, 400 animals were adopted out, including 224 kittens, 72 adult dogs, 56 adult cats, 32 puppies, 12 small animals, and 4 horses!
|
|
It's a huge accomplishment made possible by our volunteers and staff, including our incredible adoption counselors, and the support of community members like you! Thank you to our community for choosing to adopt deserving pets in need and in turn, and ensuring we have the necessary resources to help the next animal in need of our care.
Did you recently adopt a new family member from KHS? We'd love to hear more! Submit your KHS alum's Happy Tail for a chance to have them featured across our social media platforms!

Some huge thank-you's to everyone at Blue Nest Home and Kitsap Junk for their generosity towards KHS! When an animal lover within the community generously donated his Kingston home - and all of its contents - to us, Blue Nest lent their auctioneering services to host an online auction, featuring over 330 unique items. Kitsap Junk aided in clearing out this home, and even pitched in an additional $500 in clear-out costs. Thank you to all who participated in this auction to help support pets in need!

We extend our deepest gratitude to McDonald's Kennels for boarding some of our shelter pups at their incredible facility while we began construction to renovate KHS's admissions building. The first phase of renovations needed to begin close to our dog holding area, potentially frightening or stressing out dogs in those kennels. Instead they were housed offsite at McDonald's, enjoying peaceful and attentive care offered by this local pet boarding facility. Thank you McDonald's Kennels!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Tasha McPherson!
|
|
Tasha began volunteering at KHS in April 2023, assisting in dog walking, kennel cleaning, enrichment, and training sessions.
She became a volunteer due to her desire to be a part of her community and because of her love of dogs! She also wanted to gain more experience by surrounding herself with different types of dogs and their unique behaviors.
When she's not walking a KHS dog or cleaning kennels, she's managing her business and her large family including 5 Australian Shepherds, 1 English Shepherd, 2 cats, 2 goats, and 6 chickens!
"Volunteering has impacted my life immensely. It's hard to explain but I feel so much lighter after my shifts. I am never disappointed because every week, I fall in love with the dogs all over again. All I want to do is help them make it to their very best life and forever family. It has greatly improved my well-being as a person in all aspects," Tasha shared.
Thank you Tasha for your commitment to KHS and all you do to improve the lives of our animals!

Welcome Kelsey Longrie!
|
|
A big warm welcome to our brand new Volunteer Manager, Kelsey Longrie! Kelsey joined the KHS team in August and has already fit right into our ever-growing and evolving volunteer program.
Along with a supportive and uplifting attitude, Kelsey brings 7+ years of non-profit experience and a Bachelors of Science in Animal Science to our program.
Originally from Tacoma, Kelsey and her partner moved to Kitsap County two years ago and now reside in Port Orchard with their dog BiBim (pictured left), cat Milo (pictured right), and two foster cats, Turnip and Squash.
|
|
When asked what she's most excited about in this role Kelsey said, "I'm most excited about supporting our volunteers as they thrive in their roles and provide endless compassion and love to our animals each day and continuing to make positive progress in various programs like the Pet Food Pantry to meet the needs of our community."
We are so exited to see Kelsey expand and grow this program and the positive impact she will bring to our team!

Donor Spotlight
Eagle Harbor & Book'em
|
|
National Dog Day falls on Saturday, August 26 and is a day to celebrate our canine companions and how they enrich our lives every day.
Book'em generously donated 50% of the proceeds from all dog-related books sold on this holiday to KHS while Eagle Harbor Book Company donated the net proceeds of all items sold from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.!
Collectively, this collaboration raised almost $450 in donations, along with various supplies that will go so far in keeping our furry friends happy and healthy in the shelter.
We are so grateful for the outstanding support of local businesses like these who make the work we do possible . Thank you Book'em and Eagle Harbor Book Company!
