Is “Sabbath Day” just another word for Sunday?
Actually, sabbath (in Hebrew shabbat) is originally a Jewish tradition that is observed from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. It is a day of rest – a day to follow in God’s example in Genesis and take time to cease from creating. It is also a day that contains a lot of traditional prayers and opportunity to delve into God’s word. If curious to learn more, click here to view a great article on sabbath.

“But some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why are you doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?’” In today’s day and age, we can likely empathize with the difficulty in leaving work at work and truly taking a break. It seems that there is always something that needs to be done: send an email, make a call, finish a report, think ahead to what is coming, and so on. Having an imposed day of rest sounds like a luxury… so why then do Jesus and his disciples seem to ignore it? When does freedom actually become bondage? How does Jesus reshape what freedom actually looks like?
Gracious God, there are many things that bind us – some of which we are aware, and many of which we are not. Liberate us from (self) imposed prisons, and free us to live in new life in you. In the name of our savior, Jesus, Amen.

Lazarus House has a critical need for overnight volunteers at this time. An overnight volunteer sleeps during their shift, only to be called out by Operations Staff to be present should staff need to handle a quick emergency on site. A Lazarus House trained staff member is present and awake the entire night. Volunteers can arrive between 9:00-10:00 pm, then wake and leave any time after 6 am to end the shift. Donations Needed for St. Andrew Distribution |
We're collecting baby diapers (sizes 1-6) and baby wipes for the St. Andrew Distribution this Saturday. Donations can be dropped off at GLC until 3 pm Friday, January 29. Thank you for your continued generosity! Contact Julie Slifka for more information.

Thank you for the "Drop By" poinsettia, sign and invitation to the Christmas Eve service. We were very moved by this outreach and appreciative of the creative energy and hard work that went into it. What a blessing it was to be in our church home, see familiar faces and hear the good news. It brought tears to our eyes and joy to our hearts.
