President Biden Announced His Intent to Nominate Charles Sams to Lead National Park Service

This week, President Biden announced his intent to nominate tribal leader, Charles "Chuck" Sams as Director of the National Park Service. Sams has over 25 years experience working in tribal and state governments and for the conservation non-profit sector. He most recently served as Deputy Executive Director for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and was appointed to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown. He also previously served as Director of the Trust for the Public Land's Tribal Lands program. He is an enrolled member of the Cayuse and Walla Walla tribes, which are part of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. If confirmed, Sams would be the first Native American to serve as Director of the National Park Service. Interior Secretary, Deb Haaland, expressed her support for his nomination.

"The diverse experience that Chuck brings to the National Park Service will be an incredible asset as we work to conserve and protect our national parks to make them more accessible for everyone. I look forward to working with him to welcome Americans from every corner of our country into our national park system. The outdoors are for everyone, and we have an obligation to protect them for generations to come," said Secretary Deb Haaland.

Pending Senate confirmation, Sams would be the agencies first permanent director since former Director, Jonathan Jarvis stepped down in January, 2017 at the end of the Obama administration. President Trump relied four acting Directors during his term. Charles Sams' nomination received strong praise from the Coalition to Protect America's National Parks and the National Parks Conservation AssociationHis nomination will now go before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, before consideration by the full Senate.
A Multiyear Effort to Commemorate the 250th Anniversary of America's Founding in 2026 Officially Launched

America250, a multiyear effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America's founding in 2026 officially launched this month. The purpose of the U.S Semiquincentennial Commission, created by Congress, and the corresponding America250 Foundation, was to catalyze a more perfect union by designing and leading the most comprehensive and inclusive celebration in country's history. In addition to commemorating America's first 250 years, the efforts looks to inspire Americans to imagine the next 250 years.

At an official ceremony earlier this month, 20 federal agencies, including the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, signed on to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work in collaboration with America250 in recognizing the 250th anniversary of America's independence. ACHP Vice Chairman, Jordan Tannenbaum, spoke during the ceremony.

"The opening words of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 say, 'the spirit and direction of the Nation are founded upon and reflected in its historic heritage,' " Tannenbaum said in his remarks. "It is the ACHP's distinct pleasure to help you highlight the important role historic preservation has played in the first 250 years of development of this nation."
