President's Message

Greetings MHAO members

Can you believe that it is February already?! Before you know it, the colder weather will be behind us, the flowers will be blooming and the weather will be warmer. Hmm, that must mean that show season is following closely behind. Or, its time to start shedding some of those layers and get out to enjoy a trail ride in the warm sun!
There is a listing of all the shows in this newsletter and I would encourage you to check the schedule out. Since we didn’t have a show season here in the PNW last year, I know that everyone is anxiously awaiting the start of our shows this year. All the show committees have been busy at work and are ready to welcome you all back to the ring and are planning to put on safe and fun shows. Rest assured, the shows will be following the safe practices and guidelines to keep everyone safe while we continue to deal with the COVID pandemic. As time goes by, we will have more information as to whether spectators will be allowed and what the atmosphere of the shows will be. Personally, I will be happy to see all my fellow Morgan lovers, even if we have to stay 6 feet apart! It’s been too long since we have all been together!

And if the ring doesn’t call you, is there anything better than going down the trail in the fresh air and enjoying the company of your horse and trail riding buddies. What an absolutely perfect socially distancing event!

So no matter what…get ready, Spring is coming and your horse is calling for a little fun social interaction!

USEF Announcement
USEF Recognizes Lucy Enns as 2020 Junior Equestrian of the Year
2020 Junior Equestrian of the Year
Lucy Enns
(Shelli Ford Photography)

Lucy Enns has participated in the equestrian industry both in the arena and in its governance. Enns was a finalist in the American Morgan Horse Association Youth of the Year contest in 2019 and 2020 and currently serves on the AMHA Youth Council as Vice President of Central Region. She is an accomplished young driver, earning five top-10 finishes with her mare Mabelene at the 2020 Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show. She has also tried her hand at officiating, & participating in multiple AMHA youth judging clinics.

Enns started at Friends University in Wichita, Kan., this past August and intends to start her own Morgan breeding program in the future.

She competed at the Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show for the first time in 2008 in the leadline class.
Six-year-old Enns was starstruck watching the show horses proudly move around the arena that night and was determined to become one of those competitors.

Enns faced many obstacles on her way to that goal. Her four older siblings all have some form of disability, so Enns always prioritized family and understood that her equestrian dreams would rely on hard work and her characteristic independence. She worked at her barn, the Wichita Riding Academy, and volunteered at local shows, observing people and learning about their training methods. She quickly learned that difficult decisions are part of life with horses when two of her competition horses got sick and ultimately needed to be put down.

Enns tried out many different disciplines to find what Mabelene loved to do. They finally found their niche in 2020 when Enns started training “Mabel” to drive with the support of Jim McCune. Everything fell into place at the Morgan Grand National where the pair earned third place in the Carriage Pleasure Driving Single World Championship. Enns was very pleased with the result but was most elated to be back in the competition ring after working so hard to be there again.

Pegasus International Equestrian Resort & Venue planned near Oakland
Pegasus, an International Equestrian Resort & Venue, is planning to ride into Douglas County in the future.
The property near Oakland is around 3,000 acres and located on the West side of the Metz Hill Road exit.

The project is being funded by private investors across the country. The primary focus of Pegasus will be equestrian competition, but it can host non-equestrian events when possible.
Quinn and Drew Millegan, brothers and operators of the Woodworth Contrarian Fund, are taking on the task of Pegasus. They believe the West Coast is in need of a world-class equestrian facility.

“It’s been a decade in the works,” Drew Millegan said. “The site is ideal, you would be hard-pressed to find a better spot in the state. We’re getting a lot of positive feedback.”

Pegasus will invest at least $120 million. It’s expected to provide 500 jobs when it opens. Based on 2015 employment data, Pegasus expects to be the sixth-largest direct employer in the county, just behind Seven Feathers Casino Resort.
Pegasus’s focus is to bring business and shows that would never come to the area otherwise, which in turn benefit the entire local economy.
The project still needs preliminary approval from the Douglas County Planning Commission following a public hearing in March or April. Construction could start sometime in 2022 and be completed by late 2024.

Pegasus would include up to five indoor climate-controlled arenas; outdoor grass and sand arenas; a combined driving course; an equestrian cross-country course; four full-size grass polo fields; and a resort/spa.

The main arena is expected to cost $25 million to build, with auxiliary arenas expected to cost around $10 million each.
The site has its own private ridgeline airstrip, with a runway of 5,100 feet capable of taking private jets, smaller passenger planes and some cargo planes.
While the site is currently approved for 200 1/2-acre lots (under the name Heaven’s Gate), Pegasus’s application for the resort and venue will keep the site in one piece.

Linda Royer is the lead on the project, while Mary Arnstad is the hotel lead. Royer and Arnstad are both experienced equestrians.
J.W. Millegan will serve as project manager advisor.
Quinn and Drew Millegan are the fifth generation to live in Oregon, and their fourth great-grand uncle, Aaron Rose on the Millegan side, founded the city of Roseburg.

Roseburg is Douglas County’s largest city.
This is the second attempt by J.W. Millegan to develop a similar facility in Oregon. The first try was a location near Sheridan that was not successful. Part of the problem was a wetland in the location they were trying to use. They could not get the zoning changed for their purpose. The backing is different on this attempt, and no wetland challenges exist. Approval for the project is still pending.

On Training a Reining Morgan Horse

Some Words Of Wisdom From Amie Owens Taber

This time of year, lots of folks are looking to put horses in training. Some to start their career under saddle, others to tune up.
A few things to consider:

Geography- how far away are you comfortable being?

Compatibility- seriously and honestly assess if you, the horse and the trainer all have the same interest. The horse is the most adaptable.

Budget- if you are starting a Reiner, Cowhorse, or rodeo horse and the future rider of the horse is not already proficient in that discipline, you need to plan for a bare minimum of 6 months with the trainer and realistically 12 months or more of lessons and training to be a little good at it.

There are some amazing trainers that admire our breed and will give the Morgan a fair shot at success. Remember that as the atypical breed in the stock horse world we are at a disadvantage; we start our horses later, the standard methods of teaching certain maneuvers don’t work well. (Don’t lope a Morgan down to teach the stop. ). Be prepared to be the “B” string. If your trainer is headed to Reno and has to chose between your Morgan and the High Brow Cat colt, your horse is probably staying home. It’s not about you or even the Morgan, it’s about the trainer’s career and making sure the barn is still full after your horse goes home. Don’t get sore, get involved. Some of our horses have great potential, some of our horses will only be mid-level, some of our horses won’t be very good at all. That’s the way of it.

Brought to you by the Oregon Horse Council
Northwest Horse Fair & Expo
To say this last year has been full of uncertainty is an understatement. Like all of you we have felt the tremendous impact of COVID-19 in our personal and professional lives. We remained hopeful that the regularly scheduled 2021 Northwest Horse Fair & Expo would be held as scheduled. As the COVID-19 restrictions continued to stay in place we discussed alternate dates - first later in the spring, and then early fall. Unfortunately, with no indication of when and to what level restrictions may be eventually lifted, we see no clear path to holding a 2021 expo. We are instead planning for March of 2022 to return to the Linn County Fair & Expo Center in Albany, Oregon with renewed enthusiasm for being together in person and Celebrating the Spirit of the Horse.
Mark your calendar for March 25-27, 2022. We look forward to the day when we can all be together in person again.

5 Products that Help Relieve Riding Related
Back Pain
Equestrians are no stranger to aches and pains.

Between thigh strain from No Stirrups November, sore arms from carrying heavy water buckets, and the bumps and bruises that come with controlling (or sometimes not controlling) 1,000 pound animals, pain is part of the game.

But some aches are worse than others. Persistent back pain is among the more restricting. According to Advanced Medical Clinic, “Low back pain is common among horseback riders” and is most often related to “strained muscles from excessive riding or improper posture while on the horse.”

We’d never suggest you ride less. So! If you find that you’re doing less swinging out of the saddle and more slowly sliding out of it from back pain, here are a few things that can help.

15 Questions for Equestrian Business Owners to Make 2021 the Best Year Yet
It’s a new year, and like every January, I am excited about all of the possibilities for the 12 months that lie ahead.

2020 was undoubtedly a challenging year and, to be honest, I am ready to leave it behind. But, as many age-old cliches go, it was a year that provided unexpected growth in many ways I could have never imagined.
One of those unexpected surprises was the creation of Avenue Equestrian. A true quarantine baby, Avenue Equestrian combines my lifelong passion for horses with my professional marketing experience to help equestrian small businesses grow and thrive by determining what their goals are and the avenues to get there.
In this monthly series, I’ll be sharing my expertise on key areas of business and performance planning through the lens of the equestrian industry. As we know, the global pandemic has greatly impacted the equestrian world, and while I am optimistic that this new year will bring new opportunities, it is important that business owners have a full set of tools to rely on for continued business success. If 2020 has taught us one thing, it’s that we need to be prepared—for anything.

Second Article From Horse Network:
Rosette Stone has released a new course for friends and family of horse enthusiasts to learn how to communicate with their loved ones by speaking ‘horse.’
In a press release, the company said that linguistic research revealed a unique variant of English among horse people and that there was significant communication gaps between this subset and the general English-speaking population. Further market research revealed significant demand for the program from people desperate to communicate with their loved ones.

“We discovered there were thousands of people across the United States who didn’t understand each other, even though they all supposedly spoke the same language,” the press release stated. “This program will allow countless people to better navigate the foreign equine world their loved ones inhabit.”

Bob Speeksmore just finished a three-month trial of the program and said that for the first time in 20 years, he knows what his wife is talking about.

“Over dinner last night we had an intense conversation about how the travers helps lateral suppleness and hind-end engagement,” he said.
“She invited me to audit a clinic with her this weekend. The passion has truly returned to our marriage.”
After a brief introductory course in ‘General Horse Terms,’ Speeksmore focused on the ‘Dressage Dialect’ portion of the program. Rosette Stone also offers programming in the Hunter/Jumper, Reining, Barrel Racing, Endurance, and Eventing dialects. The company has plans to customize these offerings to different parts of the world. “We were shocked to find out that these discipline dialects can differ significantly from country to country. We are now working on customized courses for Australia, South Africa, and the U.K.,” continued the press release.

“I can’t wait for this course to be customized for the U.K.,” said Arthur Adams. “Last week my daughter asked me to bring a numnah to the gymkhana and I hadn’t the foggiest what she was on about.”

“At Rosette Stone we are dedicated to changing people’s lives through the power of language education. We see so much potential to connect horse and non-horse people through these new courses,” said the company’s CEO.
Is this for real??? I don't know. We do have our own language full of our own jargon.
Depending on how much we each concentrate on our own disciplines, sometimes it is hard to even understand each other. We might benefit in our efforts to grow our sport if we learned to speak more in the language of a layman inexperienced in the equine world.

In Memoriam

Lynn Coe
1941 - 2021
On January 16th we unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Lynn Coe. Our family is devastated by the sudden loss but grateful for everyday that we had with her. She is survived by her brother Jim Huff, niece Evelyn Huff, nephew Ace Huff, daughters Sammi Hazen and Renee Cairns, grandchildren Jennifer Hazen, Whitney Downs James Cairns, and Suzie Zimmerman, and great grandchildren Aiden, Liam and Zoey Downs.
She leaves behind many friends that have already reached out and we are extremely grateful for your prayers and condolences. Due to covid-19 we are not going to be able to have funeral services and will instead have a celebration of life in July which would have been her 80th birthday and she was very excited to have been planning the big bash already. So we will have that party like she wanted and hopefully things will be more open and able for people to join us and celebrate the life of a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend and great grandma that Lynn was.
Jennifer Hazen

Lynn Coe was a much loved and long time member of the Morgan family. She was a big part of the Northwest Morgan scene for many years, as was her mother Evelyn Huff. A number of our Northwest community sent notes recalling riding lessons from Lynn and Evelyn. And many shows valued her skill as a show manager.

Our hearts go out to Lynn's family, and to all who loved her. '

Charles (Chuck) Court
Our condolences to the family and friends of horseman, Chuck Court, pictured here with "My Song". Mr. Court spent many years in the Pacific Northwest before relocating across the border to Abbotsford, British Columbia. He and his wife, Carol, are credited with revitalizing the Saddlebred industry in British Columbia.

From Saddle Horse Report (2006): "When the Court’s moved their training stable from Arlington, Washington, where they had had much success, to British Columbia, the industry was struggling at the time. However, several of the Court’s clients moved with them, and they attracted a number of clients from British Columbia and Alberta. They became very involved with the British Columbia Saddlebred Club and helped to revitalize the British Columbia Country Classic Horse Show, which is a popular show in the northwest. The clients of Court Farm have become aggressive in the Saddlebred industry by showing outside of their circuit at shows such as the American Royal. Their clients have also made purchases from Missouri and Kentucky. The Courts have won several awards from their region including the 2005 Horse Industry Professional of the Year Award from the Horse Council of British Columbia. As a result of the Courts’ dedication, people in British Columbia are now having fun and enjoying their Saddlebreds."

They received the Gordon Jenkins International award from the American Saddlebred Horse Association in 2006.

From Linda Collins:
I am so going to miss him. So very thankful to him and to Carol for the years of of friendship, family, and so many wonderful memories. I would not be where I am today without them both.

It just won’t be the same without our morning visits and his big bear hugs. Thank you for believing in this chubby little girl, when no one else did. And for giving me the confidence, tools, experience, and support to make me better each day. Forever grateful and so thankful for such an amazing trainer, teacher, mentor and friend/family.

Cannot wait until the border is open again to go visit Carol and Jess and hug them tight.

Chuck was also well known within the Morgan community.
He showed at many of our shows in the Northwest & coached many of us.
Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and all who knew him.
