-------This coming Wednesday, Fr. Deogratius Kaundula, my priest friend who goes by Fr. Deo, who has spent a month at our parish on holiday from his diocese, will be returning to his homeland. He will be retracing the odyssey that brought him here earlier this summer, three flights of a cumulative 24 hours in the air, 15 hours on the ground with layovers, and then a five-hour ride back to his parish in Pemba, Zambia. He has been very graciously welcomed by many parishioners. I have been asked, “Is it okay if we give him a donation to support his parish?” or “Is he going to speak at the Masses at St. Mary’s asking for support?” and “Fr. Mike would we make a check out to him or to St. Mary’s to help him in his ministry?” I want to thank you for the warm welcome, hospitality for the generosity offered to him.

-------Parishioners have shared with him their stories of time traveled on safari in different African countries. Zambia is a young country, receiving independence from Britain in 1964. The national economy continues to struggle with the Zambian dollar devalued on a regular basis. Much of the country and his parish depends on agriculture for their wellbeing. The weather has been difficult and the crops this year have not been plentiful. A few scenarios that may paint a picture of how any support offered to Fr. Deo will yield great results in supporting his parishioners and the parish ministry not only at Christ the King Parish in Pemba but the other 14 outstations / Mass centers that Fr. Deo is responsible for and ministers at.

-------Fr. Deo’s parish currently has a meeting room, without chairs, for visiting organizations to rent out. Without chairs they are only able to charge a minimum amount. Guests sit on the ground for the meetings and activities held there. With chairs and other accommodations, they could rent the room for more, increasing income from outside the parish. A chair cost K350 (Zambian kwacha) – 50 chairs would cost K17,500 (kwacha). One chair in US dollars is about $20, 50 chairs would cost $1,000. I do not have an example to offer on the cost of tables.

-------Fr. Deo’s parish has built some small apartments that they hope to rent out. The small apartments are built – currently without roofs. A roof costs about K45,000 (Zambian kwacha) – in US dollars that is $2,500. In the coming years, as funds are available they want to build a small community of apartment buildings, allowing them sources of income from outside of the parish.

-------The Parish Treasurer works with Fr. Deo in setting an annual / monthly budget. The offertory from the three Masses each Sunday average a total of K360 (Zambian kwacha) or $20 US. Christ the King Parish runs at a deficit of about K6,000 shortfall per month. The monthly shortfall is about $350 per month in US dollars or $4,200 annually. This is a very streamlined example of the limited financial resources that parishioners of his parish are able to offer.

-------Fr. Deo is trying to inspire and encourage the parish to work towards purchasing a parish vehicle so he can minister more regularly to the out stations. The current parish vehicle is 18 years old. In the past 8 months the parish has been able to put K6,000 (Zambian kwacha) in the bank. They need to raise K150,000 (kwacha) for the diocese of Monze to contribute towards the cost and then an NGO from Germany assists with the balance. In US dollars, the parish of Christ the King needs to raise $8,500 US dollars to move forward and get a more reliable vehicle.

-------These examples help paint a picture of the vastly different economic environment Fr. Deo ministers in on a daily basis. I was able to sponsor him by providing flights and incidental expenses and will continue to support him. Any additional support will help him and his parish. His time here in Lake Forest and the Archdiocese has provided him with untold numbers of photographs and stories to share with his family and parishioners at Christ the King Parish in Pemba, Zambia. Please pray for his safe return home when he departs Chicago from O’Hare this Wednesday.

-------Members of the Parish Council and Finance Council have been working on possibilities of expanding our current “Sharing Parish opportunities” to the parishioners of St. Mary’s. I will be inviting their prayer to see if Fr. Deo and Christ the King Parish may be an international parish that we will support as a sharing parish with the parishioners of St Mary’s.

-------Beginning on Sunday, September 10 through Pentecost Sunday on May 19, 2024, we will be offering an evening Mass on Sundays at the Church of St. Mary. Due to the dates of holidays, there will be some occasions when a Sunday Mass is not offered during the next nine months. We will communicate any changes in the Mass schedule through the bulletin and social media. You are always encouraged to check the website of our parish or any parish you visit when traveling to see any updates or changes in the Mass schedule.

-------God bless you in “Eucharistic lives” of gratitude, generosity, and compassion,
