Healthy at School

Summer is coming to an end and students are heading back to the classroom. This school year, just like the last, will look a little different as we continue to see cases of COVID-19. Everyone wants this to be a safe, successful school year that does not have to come to an unexpected halt. For this to happen, our schools need staff, families and the entire community working together and learning to adapt together so our students and educators can be #HealthyatSchool.

Some of our kiddos have been out of classroom for a long time, so returning is an even bigger transition this year. Families may experience a wide range of emotions about what is to come. Be sure to connect with your child and let them know it’s normal to feel fear, stress or even anxiety during this time.

By turning preventive measures into good, solid habits, we can stop the virus from spreading in the school systems. These include:
  • Stay home when you feel sick. Before your child leaves the house, check for a fever and monitor other for conditions such as fever or chills, cough, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell, new runny nose or congestion, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, sore throat to determine if your student is well enough for class.
  • Properly wear a face mask consistently.
  • Practice social distancing.
  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds using soap and water.
  • Try not to touch your face.
  • Avoid touching frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs or railings.
  • Vaccination is available for those 12 and up. Vaccination is the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not only do students and families need to take safety measures against the virus, there are other healthy tips to keep in mind to make the school year successful.
  • Make sure to provide healthy meal option for your kids, including breakfast. Students who eat breakfast are more alert during class.
  • Get students back into the routine of their school-year bedtimes. This includes cutting back on playing electronic games and watching TV before bed.
  • Keep kids hydrated with healthy drink options like water and milk. It will help prevent fatigue, improve mood, aid digestion and enhance brain function.
  • Incorporate sports and exercise into their daily routines to help keep them focused, improve their behavior and boost positive attitude after sitting all day in class.

The Parkway Experience Display

Join the Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities Department at the St. Joseph 2021: From Steam to S.T.E.A.M. Festival August 20-21 at Civic Center Park.

The Parkway Experience will take visitors on a journey through St. Joseph’s historic park and parkway system. Dating back to the late 1800s, St. Joseph has been blessed with donations of beautiful land for the purpose of community parks. Families such as the Smith, Mitchell and Krug paved a way for the park system as residents know it today. In this exhibit, learn how the Works Progress Administration played an essential role in the development of the system, how the municipal bands brought musical cheer to neighborhoods, and how St. Joseph became known as "Tulip Mad" in the spring.

As visitors tour the walking exhibit within Civic Center Park, they will follow the outline of the parkway from Krug Park to Hyde Park with interactive activities and educational displays in-between.
