First Generation Student Day

A first-generation student is the first in their immediate family to graduate from a college or university. In 2017, The Council for Opportunity in Education and the Center for First-generation Student Success launched the inaugural First-Generation College Celebration on November 8. This event was started to encourage communities to better understand the barriers plaguing higher education and the support necessary for this critical and resilient population to continue thriving.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates that 12.4% of the 2021-2022 matriculants to medical schools are first-generation college students, up from 10.8% in 2018-2019. The AAMC provides academic, professional development, emotional, and financial resources to support first-generation medical students.

Happy Diwali

November 12 marks India’s most important festival of the year, Diwali, or the "Festival of Lights." This five-day festival is a time to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. This event is widely observed by over a billion people from a variety of faiths across India and its diaspora. The five days of Diwali are marked by prayer, feasts, fireworks, family gatherings, and charitable giving. For some, Diwali also is considered the beginning of the new year.
