Maundy Thursday Service of Tenebrae

April 1, 2021
7:30 p.m.

The service of Tenebrae
(from the Latin word for “shadows”)
is an ancient ritual commemorating Jesus’ final hours.
As scripture is read, candles are extinguished.
The candles represent the twelve disciples who,
each in their own way, betrayed, denied, or abandoned
their teacher and leader.
The Christ candle at the center of the table
symbolizes the presence of Christ,
even in the darkest of times.

Opening Words
Opening Prayer
Loving God, Holy Mystery, tonight we gather to remember our Savior
and his sacrifice of love for us. We pause to recall his last meal with
his closest friends and disciples and to share in it with him. We will
remember the betrayal he suffered and the pain he bore. We pray that
our time together will help us to grow in faith as we look forward to
resurrection morning and all that it means. May we recognize your
Spirit among us this night…

Silent Confession

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father*, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever. Amen

*Please feel free to pray as you wish. We respect tradition — and yet we welcome images of the Divine that are diverse and inclusive.

What Wondrous Love is This
NCH #223
What wondrous love is this, O my soul! O my soul! What
wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is
this! that Christ should come in bliss to bear the heavy cross for my
soul, for my soul, to bear the heavy cross for my soul!

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing, to
God and to the Lamb, I will sing; To God and to the
Lamb who is the great I Am, while millions join the theme, I will
sing, I will sing; while millions join the theme, I will sing.

And when from death I'm free, I'll sing on, I'll sing on, and
when from death I'm free, I'll sing on! And when from death I'm
free, I'll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I'll sing
on, I'll sing on, and through eternity I'll sing on!

Holy One, by coming to your table, we receive more than

whom we receive life and in whom we are bound in
covenant. Renew us, we pray, so that we may serve as
Christ served. Amen.

O Sacred Head Now Wounded
NCH #226
O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, your only crown,
How pale you are with anguish, with sore a bust and scorn!
How does your visage languish which once was bright as morn!

What you, dear Savior, suffered was all for sinners' gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression, but yours the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior, for I deserve your place;
Look on me with your favor, O grant to me your grace.

What language shall I borrow to thank you, dearest friend;
For this your dying sorrow, your pity without end?
May I be yours forever; and though my days be few,
O Savior, let me never out live my love for you!

Ah, Holy Jesus
NCH #218 v 1 & 4
Ah, holy Jesus, how have you offended, that mortal
judgment has on you descended? By foes derided,
by your own rejected, O most afflicted!

Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay you, I do a-

and your love unswerving, not my deserving.

Time for Silent Reflection
Parting Hymn
Were You There?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
O, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
O, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
O, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
