Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
Luke 5:5
“It is what it is.”
It is one of the most senseless statements on planet earth, and I say it often. Think about it for a moment, it really is a silly phrase. Another favorite is, “Well it’s better than nothing.” Huh? Yes of course anything is better than nothing, but why do we say it? We say things that oftentimes do not make sense.
In Luke chapter five, something remarkable happens and it all starts with Jesus’ words. Simon Peter and his fishy associates were cleaning nets after a long, fruitless night of fishing. They caught nothing, they were tired and probably grouchy. The teacher, Jesus, said something to Simon that might have sounded silly. “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon’s reaction was one of experience and exhaustion. “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.” Putting out into the deep water with the bright sun up, didn’t make any sense.
Maybe today, like Simon, you feel all fished out. You have been praying for a miracle, for peace, for contentment, and all of it seems so far off. You are tired.
Simon Peter was tired too but he said to Jesus, “But because you say so I will let down the nets.”
“Because you say so.” Our Lord’s word is always good. Jesus says he is with you always. Jesus says not to worry. He says to pray. Jesus says whoever believes in me will not perish but have everlasting life. Sometimes it may be hard to believe His word, but we can simply repeat Simon’s words, “Because you say so, I will ….”
Well, you know the rest of the story. The fisherman’s nets broke and the boats began to sink with the impossible catch. But the only thing that sunk on that marvelous day was Simon’s doubt. Surrounded by flopping fish, Simon didn’t question Jesus, he confessed his sin, and worshiped him. Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” When Jesus says you are loved and sent …you are.
It is what it is.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Diego, who was severely injured in a “new build” home explosion in Aspen. At this time his prognosis is heartbreaking. He may never be able to walk again. Pray for peace and provision for him and his family.

Rosemarie, Dora's niece, who is experiencing serious trials with her health and is waiting for a kidney transplant. Pray for healing and that she receives a kidney.

Patti Hamberger's great grandson, who had a seizure and spent the night in the hospital last week. Pray for continued recovery.

Jose Domenech, who has been in the hospital suffering with covid pneumonia. He is making great improvements with each day and is now home. Pray for continued healing and comfort.

Todd Purse, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Pray for healing and comfort.

Kayla, who is still recovering after her ankle surgery. Pray for a full recovery.

Jackie's sister-in-law, Gwen, who is dealing with serious heart and kidney complications. Pray that her kidneys begin to function properly again and that she is healed.
