A Message from Candace
Fall is here, and there is nothing better than watching the foliage change color from green to beautiful shades of orange, red and burgundy. I love 4 seasons. As we approach the holiday season it should be a joyous time of year for many of us, but for me I just see the latest crash statistics and rack my brain to think of what more we can do to keep people from making dangerous driving choices. According to the latest numbers, "NHTSA estimates that 9,560 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the first quarter of 2022. This is an increase of about 7% as compared to the 8,935 fatalities projected for the same quarter in 2021. This would be the highest number of first-quarter fatalities since 2002." If you have any ideas on how to reduce those numbers, let me know.
In 2020 a pedestrian was killed every 81 minutes and injured every 10 minutes in traffic crashes. I walk more than I drive since I don't have a car. I can't tell you how many times I have barely managed to cross the street without getting hit. I have to constantly be on the look out for drivers on their Blue Tooth running stop signs and turning into the cross walk where I am walking, not to mention those drivers on their cell phones. Speeding drivers running stop signs give me nightmares and I have learned that PTSD is a common occurrence each time I make it across the street alive. Walking shouldn't be fatal, yet it is because of careless, reckless and selfish drivers who do not focus on their driving and who act like they own the roads.
Please drive safe and encourage others to do the same. You can be a lifesaver, just by encouraging safe driving.
Happy Halloween!
